From Page to Place
Working closely with Paolo, Alison and the Smythson team, Four-by-Two developed a new retail concept for Smythson at Heathrow Terminal 5, taking inspiration from one of the brand’s most recognisable details, the gilt-edged pages of its notebooks and diaries.
That detail became the starting point for a new architectural language, expressed through the sculptural ribbed façade, gold-edged detailing and the material palette used throughout the store.
The wider, more open shopfront gives the store a stronger presence within Terminal 5, while inside, warm timbers, brass detailing, marble-inspired surfaces and bespoke oak flooring create a refined backdrop for Smythson’s collections.
Personalisation and gold-stamping areas sit at the heart of the experience, celebrating the craftsmanship and bespoke service that have defined Smythson for generations.
The result is a space that feels unmistakably Smythson, while creating a fresh and contemporary retail experience for today’s global traveller.
“Our ambition was to create a retail concept that feels unmistakably Smythson. By drawing inspiration from the gilt-edged pages, craftsmanship and materiality that define the brand, we developed a design language that translates those details into a contemporary retail environment. The result is a space that celebrates Smythson’s heritage while creating a distinctive new expression of luxury retail.”
