"Red Wine", 2021, mixed media (acrylic, spray and canvas on canvas) by Andrei Moldovan.

Born in Romania in 1989, Andrei currently lives and works in Spain. His striking visual style is drawn from his experience in photography, street art, and graphic and interior design. He cites Brutalist architecture and Brancusi as influences.

We lost a 20th-century icon last year.

This behind-the-scenes photograph of Brigitte Bardot was taken by Peter Basch in Madrid, 1957 — at the height of her early fame, but before the mythology that would later grow up around her.

Poised and entirely self-possessed, her gaze drifts beyond the immediate scene, quietly resistant to the instructions implied by a disembodied, directing finger. It’s a moment not of performance, but of presence.

This is a 30th-anniversary gelatin silver print, produced in 1987 from the original negative, signed and dated by the photographer.

This late 20th century ebony sculpture is a representation of the blind Tanzanian Master Drummer, Morris Nyunyusa. Dating from c.1970, the piece measures approximately 22in (56cms) long. Nyunyusa was a significant figure in Tanzanian culture and famed for his ability to play up to 12 drum's simultaneously. A similar piece was presented to HM Queen Elizabeth II by President Mkapa at the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in 1997. It is now part of the Royal Collection.
