If we could own any David Hockney work, this might just be the one.
We Two Boys Together Clinging was created in 1961, when homosexual acts between men were still illegal in Britain. Taking its title from a poem by Walt Whitman, it quietly celebrates love, intimacy and human connection in a way that was remarkably brave for its time.
Like much of Hockney’s work, it reminds us that great art doesn’t simply decorate a room. It changes the way we see the world.
The piece feels especially poignant this Pride Month as we reflect on the life and legacy of one of Britain’s greatest artists, who spent more than six decades challenging conventions and encouraging us to look again.
