As we segue into the astrological sign of Aries, we have chosen the 17th century print by Johann Bayer from 1641.

Zodiac sign Aries, Johann Bayer. 1641.

Title: [Aries.]
Printed in Ulm, 1641. Coloured with watercolour and gouache, stars highlighted in gold. Image size: 285 x 380mm.

An early depiction in print of the Zodiac sign Aries, engraved by Alexander Mair for Bayer’s ‘Uranometria’, a star atlas that shaped the way the heavens would be perceived for more than two centuries.
Johann Bayer (1572-1625), an Augsburg lawyer, was an amateur astronomer in the years just prior to the invention of the telescope. His most important innovation was a new system of identifying stars by Greek and Roman letters, known today as the Bayer designation. His ‘Uranometria’ (‘Measuring the Sky’), first published 1603, was the first celestial atlas to contain a chart of the stars in the Southern Hemisphere.

Early 19th century satire of Napoleon Bonaparte’s ambitions for world domination.

An Attempt to Swallow the World!!!
London: William Holland, 1803. Etching with original hand colour. 325 x 250mm.

Napoleon Bonaparte is depicted with a grotesquely-large head, a globe stuffed into his mouth, with Switzerland and Italy about to disappear. On the other side of the world is Great Britain. Watching is John Bull, as an elderly, spectacle-wearing ‘cit’, who says ‘’I’ll tell you what, Mr Boneypartee, when you come to a little Spot I have in my eye, it will stick in your throat and choak you!’’.
A contemporary satire of Napoleon Bonaparte, published a month before his aggressive behaviour caused Britain to declare the short-lived Peace of Amiens to be over. He had annexed the Cisalpine Republic in northern Italy and sent troops into the Helvetian Republic. Although not mentioned on this satire, Napoleon was also negotiating the Louisiana Purchase (selling the French colony to the United States), knowing he could not protect it from the British in event of war.

A satirical map of Ireland, ALEPH [HARVEY, William]. 1869.

Title: Ireland.
Printed: London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1869. 250 x 210mm.

Anthropomorphic map of Ireland. The text below the image reads, ‘’And what shall typify the Emerald Isle? A Peasant, happy in her baby’s smile? No fortune her’s, though rich in native grace , - Herrings, potatoes, and a joyous face’’.
It was published in ‘Geographical Fun’, a charming atlas of caricature maps of European counties, drawn, according to the preface, by a fifteen-year-old girl to amuse her sick brother. The author was, however, William Harvey (1796-1873), a London doctor and journalist, best-known for his book ‘London Scenes and London People’, 1863. The maps contain many references to the political changes sweeping through continental Europe, with representations of Garibaldi and Bismarck.
