Today I want to talk about Interior Design on TV. Do you watch it? It won't suprise you to know that I am obsessed.

I love because you get the best of both worlds with seeing lots of new and exciting homes but also seeing how with a bit of help, people can really make their existing homes work for them.

Interior Design Masters... well what can I say... I would love to be a contestant and the challenges look like so much fun. But I also really enjoy the discussion about design that it sparks with family and friends (are we even talking if you haven't watched it and discussed it with me?)

Sheer curtains. Passé or not?

I’ve always thought of sheer curtains as a little old-fashioned, something I associated with net curtains and homes from another era. But recently I’ve discovered they serve a very practical purpose in our home.

We’re fortunate to have a large south-facing window in our sitting room, with another similarly sized bay window above in the main bedroom. These are two of the rooms I spend the most time in, and during the recent heatwave we were desperately trying to work out how to keep the house cool.

The difference between the bedroom, with its blackout curtains, and the sitting room, with its sheer curtains, has been remarkable. The sheers seem to filter the heat while still allowing air and light into the room, preventing the space from feeling closed off and stuffy.

As an added bonus, they provide privacy too, stopping nosy passers-by from peering into our living room. Perhaps sheer curtains aren't quite as passé as I once thought.

Lets talk about style.

My style is colourful, layered and considered. I love creating spaces that feel warm, welcoming and full of personality, often using rich colours, natural textures and timeless pieces. It is also important to me that a home reflects both the building itself and its surroundings.

At the moment, I’m particularly drawn to darker, moodier schemes that create a sense of comfort and calm while still feeling elegant and liveable, which suits my own 1920s terrace home perfectly.

It may come as a surprise, then, that my previous home, a bright, modern 1960s ex-council flat, was painted mostly brilliant white, with bold pops of colour on feature walls and through the décor. I think this reflected both the architecture of the building and the way I lived at the time. I shared the flat with friends and lodgers, so it was important that the space felt welcoming and homely for everyone who lived there.

Is it worth getting an interior designer?

I am of course biased, and think it is. But why? Well, when we moved house I had just spent the last six months planning our wedding (we had a fantastic day), my in-laws had been staying for three months, I had interviewed for and started a new job, had a gorgeous but naughty puppy and a kitten with a death wish and my now husband had just moved in having been living abroad for the previous six years. I feel burnt out just reading that, and guess what? I was! Then we had to renovate the kitchen in our new house because nothing worked and the ceiling leaked!

We had a friend who was a builder, turns out he didn't really know what he was doing and despite going over our budget by 10% the room still looks unfinished, and the layout doesn't quite work. Of course, I did not have the headspace to deal with this at the time.

If I had hired a designer they would have been able to suggest a builder that had a good track record. They would have prevented some of the layout issues (my biggest frustrations are the light switch on the wrong wall by the door so you have to reach round a corner for it and the lack of full height storage). But most importantly if they had project managed, all the little bits that look unfinished... they would have spotted them and they would have been resolved before the builders left.

How do you feel about a Baked Cherry bedroom?

This is a colour, and those of you who know me know I love bold colours. Surprisingly, though, I’ve never painted anything red before. It feels like a particularly bold choice for a bedroom, but I love dark spaces. The blue undertones make it feel softer than a fire-engine red, creating a cosy room I’d happily curl up in with a good book.

Wimbledon is in full swing, and whilst I am not a tennis fan, I do love going to watch at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. There is something about the atmosphere, and of course the Wimbledon tradition of strawberries.
