In this weekends newsletter we’re reflecting on the intensity of a summer full of heatwaves and looking ahead to next year to consider planting that will thrive in drier conditions.

Sign up to our newsletter before Saturday to read about the drought-loving beauties that shrug off a heatwave and also press like a dream - unruly nasturtiums, long-legged field scabious, and hardy geraniums to name a few of our favourites…

A Peacock Yard Poppy - found by Sophie Daffern growing amongst the cobbles just outside our studio, picked and pressed before the week was out.

“Poppies are the flower-pressers’ dream. No flower retains as much of its shape and texture in the press as the poppy. No flower rewards the presser more. With this process, you can almost permanently preserve a cut flower that would normally last for only a few hours” - The Modern Flower Press: Preserving the Beauty of Nature, 2022

On Tuesday we ventured to one of our favourite places of inspiration, Charleston, just outside of Lewes, East Sussex, for a day of exploring, pressing and making amongst this seminal modernist home.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We enjoyed a wonderful garden tour by head gardener Harry Hoblyn, who described how the recent and incessant British heatwaves have affected the garden at Charleston, alongside his mission to plant fruit trees and shrubbery in time with Roger Fry’s original design and the epoch in which the artists lived. We admired Harry’s approach to maintaining the Bloomsbury groups legacy with naturalistic and artistic planting; working to balance the intense pressures of an ever changing climate while maintaining the vibrant, painterly ‘sweet disorder’ of the original planting scheme.

Alongside exploring the process of flower pressing and mounting techniques, we were fortunate enough to enjoy an exclusive tour of the house and studio, taking inspiration from the paintings and murals, with special appreciation for the floral motifs and botanical painted panels we spotted.

Thank you to all that came and to Charleston for providing us with a timely dose of unrivalled inspiration!

Our latest collections of signature and miniature pressed botanical artworks are now available online. Featuring exclusively British-grown specimens, the majority of this series has been cultivated by our co-founder Melissa Richardson in her South London garden.

Poppies and calendula were sourced from the wonderful Danielle, while a handful of species have been carefully foraged and pressed by our team.

A late summer team visit to Rachel Siegfried’s cut flower farm, in South Oxfordshire. We had a wonderful productive day picking and pressing for upcoming commissions and projects.

Thank you to for documenting.
