Number 57 Handmade 57 Handmade is a makers studio and shop located in a beautiful old Victorian chemists on Brockley/St Johns borders in SE London.

We currently support the work of local makers & artists offering a 'pop-up' space for hire. Founded in August 2020, 57handmade has three resident makers as well as a large table rental space ideal for working on projects like pattern cutting or large upholstery projects. This is our workshop event area for in house classes and available to rent out to others for workshop events. Maximum numbers va

ry depending on activity so please contact us for a chat if you are interested in hiring the workshop area. Our space is light, warm in winter, cool in summer with high ceilings and wifi. Drinks point available; Unfortunately our loo is not disabled access - structurally impossible to make the necessary changes for this. Front entrance has very low step but reasonably wide. Please call to see how we can support access where needed - if we can do it we will.

Summer days hand sewing a scrap quilt top, it’s so relaxing and requires very little movement which makes it perfect for this hot weather. Scrap quilts are literally made from left over small pieces of fabric and sewing by hand just lends itself to this weather. More than that it becomes meditative and sewing for the soul rather than anything else. There’s no planned design here, it’s all about working with the fabrics and palette that you have. It’s imperfect and I have no idea what size it will be or its destination. And that is perfect…

Recently spent a weekend with two quilt makers basting and sewing their quilts together. It’s the first quilt each have made and reflect their very different characteristics and creativity.
In sewing the featured quilt together one of the utterly delightful things was coming across small pieces of fabric showing characters and scenes. The quilt came alive with a feeling of stories it might hold. Clara, the quilt maker here, has a wonderful knack of finding unusual scraps of fabric and putting them together without inhibition to create a glorious whole. Joyous!
