Samarkand Design At Samarkand Design we source vintage textiles from around the world to create unique and distinctive home accessories.

Samarkand Design grew out of a passion for textiles. It was founded by Hilly Grumbar and Carrie Hart; a pair bound not just by friendship but also by their shared passion for design and artisanal craftsmanship. As inspired by the classic ‘English’ look as we are by our extensive travels across India and Africa, this first collection of our favourite things brings together the vibrant and the eclectic, reflecting the stories of craftsmanship from across the world. Lampshades

Samarkand’s stunning collection of lampshades and lamps are designed to illuminate, complement and enhance any style. Whether it’s the cool and crisp feel of a beach house or the rich and romantic ambience of an English country house, our lampshades bring a distinctive quality to every room. The fabrics – either block-printed cotton voile or traditional silk sarees – have been specifically chosen for their contrasting aesthetics. If you seek a clean and contemporary feel, we suggest our range of hand-blocked lampshades, which come in three designs and two sizes. The Saree Collection offers a wide variety of designs. Each vintage silk saree has been picked for its jewel-like patterns, colours and textures, reflecting the richness of India’s textile traditions. Ranging from zinging oranges and fuschias to more subtle, neutral shades, we have endeavoured to curate a range to suit every design scheme. Take a look at our first collection – these shades are available in a variety of sizes, ranging from 25cm to 70cm. Framed Embroideries

On our travels in India we have managed to find some of the most exquisite examples of antique embroidery work, including pieces made by the Banjara tribe of the Deccan plateau and intricately sewn bodices taken from traditional Rajasthani dresses. We’ve framed them, giving them a new context as pieces of striking contemporary wall art. Vintage Throws and Cushions

We also have a wonderful selection of vintage kanthas, which make for brilliant throws, bedspreads or tablecloths. Take a look at our collection of cushions made from vintage fabrics mixed with neutral linens. Fair Trade And Ethically Sourced

The idea of Samarkand grew out of a desire to encourage and promote the traditional skills of the people we encountered on our trips. Sustainability and education are at the heart of Samarkand, which focuses on improving the lives of each of the artisans we work with, bringing hope and prosperity to communities where opportunities and living standards are often limited. We aim to build lasting and positive relationships with our suppliers based on the principles of fairness and social responsibility.

On this journey through West Bengal My aim is to find artisans who are interpreting the ancient traditions of hand spun and handwoven, naturally dyed yarns.
I am learning about weaving techniques which are specific to this region especially the magical Jamdani.

I am also seeking out the master Kantha stitchers who are working to revitalise this timeless art and who are producing the best contemporary examples of it.

It may look like I loll around in the back of an air conditioned car all day - but much of that time is spent playing detective to find them. And this is the fun part!

Sometimes it’s through meeting one person who connects you with another, sometimes it’s through this much maligned app which can actually link you up with a weaver working on his own in a tiny village far from anywhere - and now we can also ask that nice fellow Claude who can be really helpful to start you off.

It’s a cliche….but there is Sooooo much to love about India and I’ve back doing the thing I love most.
Tracking down the most beautiful textiles I can find.

This time I’ve come with my old comrade in arms, Carrie who was with me for the first 5 years of Samarkand Design’s journey. We still travel together and she is the best person to discover new textiles, places and people with. We both delight in the ordinary, cheer at the extraordinary and laugh at the unexpected - and there is a lot of everything here in this undiscovered region of India. We haven’t seen a foreigner since we arrived - hurrah!!
I am already excited to show you some of our finds and it’s only Day 2.

One of the greatest joys of my job is seeking out textile treasures from around the world and to bring them to add a touch of magic to your homes.

However, the very best bit of that is meeting and sometimes befriending the brilliant weavers, artisans, collectors and dealers along the way.

During my last trip to Istanbul in 2025 I found and I knew immediately what a beautiful soul he was. Not just for his extraordinary eye for beauty, or even for his seemingly limitless knowledge about textiles but for his generosity and kindness. He owed me nothing and yet we spent several hours pouring over some of his outstanding collection of Suzanis. I will never forget that day.

I came away from those precious hours in his company so inspired and delighted to have found him.

It is a testament to him that in learning of his sudden passing this week, it feels like I’ve lost a good friend. I am so sad he didn’t get to spend longer on this earth and we never had the chance to meet again.

I have read the many tributes from people on these squares who were lucky enough to call him a true friend and who knew him over several decades so my loss is as nothing but I do want you all to know what a great man he was.

His family, many friends and The textile world has suffered a huge loss and I send my condolences to all who were close to him.

Suzani Sunday ✨
Here’s Hilly from Samarkand Design to show you just how many ways a Suzani can transform your home.

These are all vintage textiles, hand-embroidered and sourced from across Afghanistan and Uzbekistan, and every single one has a story stitched into it. 🧵

Not sure how to use one? Here are a few ideas:

🛏️ Layer it over your bed as a bedspread
🖼️ Hang it on the wall as a statement piece
🪟 Frame it as one-of-a-kind artwork
🛋️ Throw it over the back of a sofa for instant colour

Which would you try? Tell us in the comments 👇

This week with the autumn equinox, day and night stood equal — now the dark starts pulling ahead. But that’s not a season to brace for, it’s one to light well. Get ahead of it and the long evenings stop feeling like something you’re enduring and start feeling like something you designed. A few ways to do that:

→ Eye level when seated — a lamp roughly level with your eyes when sat down gives the warmest, least glare-y light.
→ Corners, not centres — one central light source flattens a room. Two or three lamps in different corners build the depth that makes a space feel held rather than lit.
→ The chair you actually sit in — give your everyday spot its own light rather than borrowing from across the room.
→ Layer your patterns — one bold shade, one plainer, so the eye has somewhere to land and somewhere to rest.

Three handmade shades to start with: Pink, Saffron & Green Keralan Cotton; Coral & Seaweed Gathered Silk; Yellow & Blue Keralan Cotton.
