Have you ever read Kindred by Octavia E. Butler?

A Black woman in 1976 is pulled back in time to the pre-Civil War South, where she must survive a world that sees her as property. Published in 1979 and it still hits harder than most novels written today.

I wanted to pair it with something from the range. Southern Belle nails the atmosphere, but the name romanticises an era that Kindred exists to confront. So that felt wrong.

Which got me thinking... do we need a Speculative Fiction melt? Something built for books like Kindred, The Time Traveler's Wife, Piranesi?

Behind every wax melt is a shelf that looks like this. Fragrance oils, essential oils, aroma molecules. Some made the cut. Some got close. Some smelled like a mistake I'll never talk about 😂 Every new scent starts here, with too many options and no xlear answer, until something clicks and suddenly you can smell the genre in the room. It's my favourite part of the job and also the part that takes the longest. Worth it every time.

Hey everyone. Quick note: Wax and Words will be temporarily closed between the 20th and 28th of August as I need to go on a business trip. The shop reopens on the 29th with 4 new scents I've been quietly working on.

FFFF: Friday Fun Fragrance Fact.

There's a molecule called INDOLE. At low concentrations it's one of the most beautiful things in fragrance. It gives jasmine its depth, orange blossom its richness, and gardenias that thick, heady quality you can't quite shake off. It's the reason certain white flowers smell intoxicating rather than just pretty.

At high concentrations, it smells like 💩. I am not joking.

Same molecule. Same chemical structure. The only difference is how much you use. A tiny amount and your brain reads it as lush, creamy, floral. Too much and your brain reads it as something you'd cross the street to avoid.

This has been understood in fragrance for over a century. It's one of those ingredients that separates a flat, one-dimensional floral from something that actually stops you mid-breath.

I use it in some of the floral scents at Wax and Words. Knowing when to stop adding it is half the job. ☺️

Hi all! ❤️

I have some exciting news. I’ve just finished my perfumery course! 🎓

I now understand so much more than just the notes that go into a fragrance. I’ve learned about fragrance molecules, accords, composition, how materials interact, and, yes, a LOT of chemistry! 😂

And honestly, I’m incredibly excited about what this means for Wax & Words.

I can now take everything I’ve learned and use it to create scents that are even more complex, balanced, interesting and, most importantly, memorable.

I already have about a million ideas in my head.

The sky is the limit now. ❤️

The “joys” of rebranding.

This has been months in the making. Dozens of designs, back and forth with graphic companies, printing companies, testing, tweaking, scrapping things and starting again. Then ordering thousands of boxes and labels in one go and hoping you got it right.

All worth it. But the part nobody warns you about? Loading trolleys with thousands of perfectly good boxes and labels from the old design and wheeling ithem to the recycling bin.

That bit breaks your heart a little.

Testing, testing, and more testing... Before a new launch is announced, I go thru several testing batches. Everything needs to be perfect: the scents (obviously), the formula, label designs. It's where my creativity goes overdrive! And I love it! I use colouring to identify batches - here I am testing our autumn limited edition.
