BREAKING GLASS
Working across ceramics, glass and metal, as well as wood, paper, copper wire, porcelain and stoneware, Christopher Matthews creates sculptural forms ranging from minimal to wildly decorated.

His pieces are built from materials, often found, ranging from minimal to wildly decorated, creating abstract, reflective forms that play with the light.

The opulence of his former world in fashion, and the joy of its subversion, has been a major influence on these new works.

Matthews invites us to question what makes a material valuable and what is capable of holding our gaze. Discover these works and more, now showing at HOWE Gallery.

Vanguard Court in Camberwell, where Christopher Matthews has his studio, has been the motor of his emerging practice.

It was there that he established himself within a community of artists, with past residents including ceramicists Edmund de Waal and Julian Stair. Their presence, and the traditions of ceramics they represent, provided an important point of departure for Matthews, who realised that he “loved the rules” of ceramics, precisely because he could choose which ones to break.

Today, Matthews works obsessively across mixed media including laser-cut metal, wood and paper, copper wire and stoneware, porcelain, glass and coloured pigment on canvas.

OPENING TOMORROW | BREAKING GLASS

We’re thrilled to announce the debut exhibition of work by Christopher Matthews at HOWE Gallery.

Six years in the making, Breaking Glass is the culmination of experimentation since Matthews’s revelatory residency at EKWC, the European Ceramics Centre in the Netherlands, where he literally broke the mould, creating molten ceramics that burst at the seams.

Entranced by reflection, Matthews has developed new methods of treating surfaces. Scrapped glass is smelted into exploding pearly orbs, their silvered surfaces scorched and blistered, becoming machines for spilling, colouring and treating light.
