An impressive and well matched set of three extra large Holophane pendant lights, their original prismatic glass shades, each with the “1909 Holophane” patent mark.

The generously proportioned ribbed shades terminate in an attractive scalloped edge, producing the distinctive light diffusion for which Holophane became renowned.

Each shade is suspended from its original vented brass gallery with aged bronze patination, complete with hanging hooks.

Originally designed for commercial and industrial interiors but this trio would look just as at home in a kitchen, dining room or hallway.

A substantial and exceptionally comfortable William IV mahogany library armchair, as finely turned out today as it would have been nearly 200 years ago ~ traditionally reupholstered in soft, supple, richly grained natural Maroc leather in ‘Nero’ from .36BourneStreet. Retaining its original white ceramic castors. English, c.1835.

Beginning with this rare early C19th Irish oak example, whose restrained yet accomplished carving and gently curved form suggest a bespoke commission for a private estate chapel or important parish church.

A bold and stylish pair of Gothic revival oak church pew benches in the manner of E.W. Pugin. English, c.1870

A pair of pale oak Gothic Revival pews, finely carved and parcel-gilt, from the Royal Hospital Chelsea, one of Britain’s most important historic institutions. Inscribed Spero Dum Spiro (“While I breathe, I hope”) and Thine is the Glory, beneath a parcel-gilt rising sun.

A very long and charming vernacular C19th pine bench, originally a pew from Painscastle Chapel in Powys, Wales. In exceptional original condition, retaining the lovely old pink paint.

From a coarse, hand-worked surface to the richness of polished stone, the process of creating scagliola is nothing short of remarkable.

Developed in C17th Tuscany, scagliola was used to adorn churches, palaces and grand interiors, prized for its warmth, richness and remarkable resemblance to marble. It also gave skilled craftsmen the freedom to create colours, veining and decorative effects beyond those found in nature. Layers of hand-coloured plaster are artfully built up over a traditional lightweight lathe core before being turned and polished to reveal its depth and character.

It is this centuries-old craft that gives our Howe Home Scagliola Column Lamps their remarkable finish. Made in England and available in Siena, Porphyry, Scaglia Rossa and Swedish Green, in two sizes, as part of the Howe Home collection.
