Stone & Light
Merit Cottage — Full House & Garden Renovation + Side Extension
A sensitive transformation of a traditional Cotswold cottage, combining timeless craftsmanship with contemporary detailing.
The design was driven by natural light, spatial clarity, and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape, reflecting our approach to creating meaningful and sustainable residential spaces.
The existing kitchen, previously constrained by low flat ceilings, was reimagined as an open-plan space with a sloped roof and four new skylights, introducing generous daylight deep into the heart of the home.
A former disused garage was converted into a high-ceiling guest bedroom with en-suite, seamlessly linking the kitchen, conservatory, and garden beyond.
Original character has been carefully retained, with exposed timber beams preserved in the living room, while new interventions — including a glazed side extension — reveal and celebrate the existing Cotswold stone. A restrained palette of stone, timber, and glass enhances light, atmosphere, and views across the countryside.
The renovation reconfigured the cottage from a two-bedroom layout to a three-bedroom, three-bathroom home, including a cloakroom, integrated under-stair storage, and improved circulation throughout. Sustainability upgrades include underfloor heating, an air-source heat pump, optimised fireplace performance, and upgraded lighting and garden landscaping.
