Yesterday I took my new otters on a journey around Tokyo. We visited my favourite haberdasher, Okadaya (Shinjuku station exit West, just past the giant screen with the cat!) they have everything you could need for your sewing and I never leave without buying something (and I've already been 4 times this trip!!) from there we jumped on the Marunouchi Line to Akasaka-Mitsuke to visit the Kioi Art Gallery, Tokyo's stencil museum. There are some truly amazing old stencils on display and we watched a great film about the techniques and purchased one or two nice small stencils... from there we jumped back on the Tokyo Metro to Omote Sando. This is Tokyo's designer district but, if you keep on walking down the hill to Harajuku and cross the big intersection, you come to Chicago, a cool vintage shop. The Japanese love old vintage American clothing but... there's also a whole room of vintage silk kimono, Haori jackets and Obi. Let's just say that a number of them will be winging their way across the globe to the UK, USA, Switzerland, Denmark and South Africa!! Today we met Bryan and have travelled to and settled in at the farmhouse. Shibori stitching and Katazome paste production is already well underway...!!

Today I returned to Tokyo from my trip to Kyoto on the Shinkansen bullet train. I managed to capture a beautiful picture of Mount Fuji shrouded in snow on the way back. Today could have been a nothing day but I ventured out to Daikanyama to the "voice of nature" exhibition by Chiaki Maki at the hillside forum. Chiaki works with wild silks and beautiful natural dies making incredible artworks. The Gallery space is very restful with something unexpected at every turn. Such beautiful work.

It's been our last day at the farmhouse for my Returners group and what a full day it has been! The otters have been finishing projects left, right and centre! From dyeing pieces in bright red madder, through further stencilling and completing and rinsing g Shibori pieces, we had a lot to talk about about show and tell this afternoon. We were sent three pieces of serious stitching as homework, two of which required copying from a template to stitch down a long length of cotton or linen fabric. The first "Ashikawa" or Reed Bank follows an in and out wavy pattern, the next, "Sugi Aya" or Cedar Twill, forms a sharp diagonal up and down pattern. These were hard to stitch but produced beautiful fabrics. Some people completed a second "Mokume" woodgrain effect scarf to their own design. And@a@dew people completed technically complex "Shirokage" or White Shadow patterns with complicated stitch paths. On to Shiroko I search of stencil cutting and paper making tomorrow....!
