You want your sewing to be exciting,
little nerve-wracking and to challenge you.

if it doesn't,
then you are playing it safe.

And don't, get me wrong,
predictable outcomes are good.
It helps us stay confident.

But you also need the excitement.
Because if sewing gets very predictable,
then it's going to get boring.

This is a harsh truth about sewing.
It's not as easy as your favourite TikTok creator makes it look.

It looks easy as it has been edited
and the mistakes erased on the final cut.
It takes time, patience, and practice.

You will get there. And I am here if you want support.

These 3 things shouldn't be happening,
and sewing teachers and sewing course makers
shouldn't be spreading these ideas.

I get frustrated with the creators
for selling their audience an idea
that is not sustainable.

These 3 are my top pet peeves:

1: They imply that you will be an expert by buying their classes and following their instructions.
You can have the best teacher in the world, but if you want to improve, you've got to practice. There is no shortcut. Practice and more practice.

2: Basics aren't covered, and sometimes, no context or logic is provided.
Learning advanced techniques is great, but not if your foundations aren't covered. You need to learn how to hand-sew or finish your hems properly as much as learning how to sew a crisp collar.

3: Suggesting and asking you to buy fabrics or specialised tools for every project.
We all have a good collection of fabric most of the time. Sometimes, we can upcycle. Asking you to buy just adds to the cost and is unnecessary. They also make content showing off their fabric shopping haul. Same for tools. We can do lots with the simple tools that we already have.

If you have been sewing for a while, you can spot the BS. But if you are a newbie sewist, for newbies, watch out for these.

If kids start young
and learn to sew,
we will wipe out the
sewing and mending skills shortage
we have today.

Its a life skill,
Like swimming,
we need to learn to sew.
