Artisan Turning

Artisan Turning I turn pieces of wood other woodturners wouldn't touch. I have just started the highly dangerous art of Lichtenberg wood burning.

I only source wood for my bowls from windfall, diseased trees or from trees that have been cut down for safety reasons.

From rough blocks to smooth curves from hidden grain to a finished piece that feels alive in your hands.
This is the part that makes it all worth it. The moment the wood shows you what it wanted to be all along.

The end game.
This is how it ends. and if you would love to buy one of my wooden treasures head to www.artisanturning.co.uk

Long yew trial post.

I want to show you every bowl I turn or burn if you're interested in such things.

I'm trying to get the timing right. Interesting, not too long yet show the process fully.

There is something magical about the beginning.
Just a few rough pieces of wood on the bench. Nothing shaped nothing polished nothing revealed yet.
But this is where the spark happens. This is where the ideas start to whisper.

Every bowl every mushroom every little treasure begins right here in the raw and the simple.

This is how it starts.

SocialLoom World Cup Deal Bonanza! âš½
We’re getting behind the team this summer and we want to help some local businesses get match-ready too. If you have been thinking about a new website, now is the time to get it sorted.
Book your build in before England are eliminated from the World Cup and you will lock in a discount on your bill. We are doing 20% off all our premium website builds and 10% off our basic Wix packages.
This deal is only running while England are still in the tournament. Once they are out, the offer is gone.
If you are a business owner or know someone who could do with a hand getting online, please let them know. We really want to help as many of you as possible and give back to our fantastic locals while we cheer England on.
Please share this around and help us spread the word.

Today I am working on a chopping board that has been Lichtenberg burnt and I am filling the lightning pattern with a bright orange resin. The colour moves slowly through the channels and settles into every branch of the burn. It is one of those calm workshop moments where you can just watch the resin flow and see the board come back to life. A simple process but a very satisfying one to share.

The wood has been well and truly butchered today.
A full stack cut down and ready for the next run of turning.
There is something satisfying about seeing all those fresh rounds and blanks lined up, each one waiting for its moment on the lathe.
Every piece has its own promise and its own story hiding inside the grain.

Feels good to have the workshop stocked and ready for whatever comes next.

The wood gods looked my way this morning through my neighbours.
They handed me this gorgeous looking Holm oak and it stopped me in my tracks.
The weight, the colour, the grain, the promise inside it.
You can feel the strength of it before the tools even touch the surface.

Moments like this remind me why I love what I do.
A gift from good people and a gift from the earth at the same time.

Back in the workshop again and I have been sorting through the apple and beech haul from wednesday. The grain is already showing some lovely movement and I can see a few bowls and maybe a couple of deeper pieces in the mix. This is the part I enjoy the most, choosing the first cuts and imagining what each log might turn into. Plenty of work ahead but I am looking forward to every minute of it.
