A very wet few weeks, its not easy to think about your garden, but if we have a dry day or two it’s a great time to re-evaluate what you may need to change.
I have managed to get out and move some perennials that have swamped other plants, also planted some bulbs to fill in gaps for the spring.
There are so many bulbs to choose from in the shops/nurseries at the moment. Below are a few I really like. But if you have some left in the shed never planted from last year, get them into the ground and you may be surprised. ( but not if they are soft too late I’m afraid) !
Remember if the ground is really wet add a handful of grit or the bulbs may rot.

Narcissus poeticus (Poet's Narcissus) as I am not keen on yellow in my garden , but lots of choice of varitations of colour for you to choose from.

Muscari armeniacum
Grape hyacinth, is spring flowering bulb with blue flowers that look like tiny bunches of grapes. They are extremely attractive to spring-flying pollinators,

Erythronium Californicum “White Beauty”
They will rise well above the rich green foliage , lovely in groups in partial shade, where they should multiply easily.

Green Manures
Summer seems to have nearly gone and here we are not far from September. Now is the time to start thinking of what you may want to change in your garden for next year. Plant a tree, shrubs or my favourite perennials.
Often garden centres start selling off old year’s stock and perennials can be a good buy. I cut them back before planting and they can be planted late even into November. It gives them time to settle in before they need their energy to grow and flower next season.

One of my ideas for this year though is to plant seeds of a green manure in some areas to improve the quality of the soil and protect it during winter. Making the soil more fertile and helping it to retain water for next year when we may have very dry conditions. My choice will be Phacelia tanacetifolia its good for pollinators. I know this is a traditional method for vegetable patches but why can’t it work for my flower garden? I will pull them up when the perennials start to come through strongly. Who knows it make work beautifully.
Here are a few early flowering perennials to consider.
Helleborus orientalis , Euphorbia martini, Bleeding hearts Dicentra spectablilis.

The rain has battered down some of my plants, a few that are still looking good though, I love perennials, most increase over the years and you can always divide up and export some to a different space, so good value too.
Repeat planting is something all the top designer do, choose a type of plant, and place it at regular intervals throughout your garden. This repetition not only creates a sense of rhythm but adds visual interest and coherence to the overall design. If you can choose something that has nice leaf form and flowers for some time even better.

Alchemilla Mollis
Good for sun and part shade scalloped leaves and lots of yellow green flowers. It self-seeds as well, adds a soft focus to any planting scheme.

Japanese Anemone
Mine are just about to flower and I only moved them this year. They have quite large leaves so need some space. Flowers for some time in varieties white or pink.

Erigeron Karvinskainus
This flowers all summer, self seeds and mine grow in the cracks of the pavement, likes sun but will pop up all over. Pink and white flowers not high so front of the border. I grow mine in a old sink.

Heuchera.
There are so many colours now from lime green, yellow and oranges some are variegated. They are easy to grow, versatile and low maintenance, popular as ground cover and for filling in gaps between taller plants, providing colour virtually all year round.
