It's Lunar New Year soon!
Bakkwa (肉乾) is meat jerky in Hokkien dialect and it was brought from the Chinese immigrants to Malaysia and Singapore as one of Lunar New Year snacks.

Seldom sold in supermarkets in England because they're expensive to import but you're in for a treat. Homemade traditional pork bakkwa with a hint of charcoal smokiness.

These pictures show the rather long process of making them and not the end product - yet.

Have you ever tried Sarawak Laksa? We are fortunate to obtain laksa paste from a local Sarawakian family-run business in Kuching. This is as authentic as it can be.

We're in the process of testing / tasting it and will potentially include it on our menu.

Happy Dragon Boat festival! We all know there's ought to be a story behind this festival. Below is what we've been told. What's your version of the story?

It is to commemorate the death of the poet and minister Qu Yuan. He was one of the highly respected official; however, he was slandered by jealously and corruption. He committed su***de by jumping into a village's river after hearing that the king wanted to exile him. The local villagers went out on a boat trying to save him and threw rice dumplings into the river so that the fish will eat the dumplings instead on Qu Yuan.

Hari Raya wouldn't be complete without Beef Rendang: a dry coconut beef stew; served with lemang: steamed glutinous rice with coconut milk in banana leaves (as we couldn't find bamboo tubes in UK).

Ingredients prepared for Bak Chang / Hokkien Savoury Rice Dumplings / 福建肉糭 / Meat Zongzi for Dragon Boat Festival (端午節) in June.

Legend said that after a famous Chinese poet called Qu Yuan (屈原) who drowned in a river, packets of rice were thrown into the river to prevent the fish from eating the poet's body. That was when zongzi began.

Don't worry, these aren't to be thrown in the canals. They're for human consumption.
