Making a Handmade Vessels from Scratch ✨🌿
Let’s talk technique! Today I’m sharing a fun, creative way to craft your own bespoke vessel—perfect if you want complete control over your form, texture, and opening.
Here’s how this piece came together step-by-step:
1. Crafting the Base
I started with a simple beach ball as the underlying form and layered it with plaster-of-Paris bandages (Modroc) to build up a strong, solid shape. The trick here is to leave a intentional opening—roughly a third to a quarter at the top—to house your design. Once the plaster was fully set, I simply popped the beach ball inside to reveal a lightweight, hollow sphere.
2. Adding Rich, Organic Texture
To transform the exterior, I took dried Lunaria seed pods and hand-glued them across the entire plaster shell using hot glue. The delicate, papery texture of the seed pods creates a beautiful surface contrast against the structural shape.
3. The Floral Mechanics
Inside, I lined the base with a little cellophane to protect the vessel and hold moisture, then added a small block of agrawool floral foam. From there, it’s all about placing your floral elements to flow naturally out of the opening.
4. Season & Palette
For this arrangement, I leaned heavily into an autumnal palette—neutrals, deep browns, warm taupes, and bronzes. It’s a color story I absolutely love working with this time of year!
The absolute best part? Because the vessel is fully handmade and durable, it can be styled and reused over and over again for future designs.
