This is the part where I have to trust the process.

Layers, colour, texture, and a little bit of chaos.

Right now it looks nothing like the painting it will become, but that’s often where the most interesting work begins.

A new canvas. Fresh possibilities.

The first layer is never the most exciting, but it’s where everything begins.

Sometimes a painting starts with no plan, just colour, instinct, and seeing where it takes you.

The beginning always looks a little different from the finished piece.

The smallest changes can completely shift a painting.

Layer by layer, it starts to settle into place.

Part 2.

This is where it started coming together.

Adding texture changed the surface, but adding colour is where the painting began to find its rhythm.

Sometimes the smallest shift changes everything.

I decided to try something different with this one.

A bit more texture. A bit more movement.

Sometimes a painting changes completely with the smallest shift.

Let’s see where this goes.

Do you ever keep adjusting something, trying to make it feel right?

That’s what this painting became.

Layers, texture, movement…slowly trying to find the balance between energy and stillness.

In the end, it was the quieter details that brought it together.

A Soft Place to Land.

Have you ever had that moment of satisfaction when your project has finally come together?

I painted “Held by the Tide” during a morning where I desperately wanted to be at the coast when the fog was just beginning to lift. I wanted to see and feel the sea air, capturing that precise feeling of quiet anticipation with the messy textures in the foreground vs. the soft, blended horizon. I also wanted to picture what could be found under the water, swimming gently with the tide.

Original mixed media and oil on canvas, 12x12 inches.

It never really begins with a finished idea.

Just colour, instinct, and a surface that slowly starts to speak back.

This heron just felt right here…
not just in form, but in feeling.

Layer by layer, it found its own presence.

And I just followed it 💙

I sat with this one for weeks.

In the end, it was the smallest shift. Adding the geese helped everything find its footing.

Sometimes it’s not about starting over, just staying with it long enough for it to come together.

A Soft Place to Land.
