At Mistley Quay Workshops, we have a brilliant display in our Showroom from Manningtree Museum on the history of Mistley, Rigby and the Malting industry, the Constable family's connection and shipbuilding.

Our building dates from 1724 and a Constable is shown on our deeds as a user of our building. The Museum's map from 1778 shows him to be Daniel Constable, the painter's uncle.

There are four photographs of John Constable's drawings of Mistley Quay. One of the boats has been identified as the 'Balloon' which belonged to the family.

Mistley Quay Workshops was used by Daniel Constable, the painter's uncle, (his father Golding Constable's brother), as you can see on this 1778 map from Manningtrre Museum's display in our Showroom. He is also mentioned as a user in our deeds.

On the display are photographs of Constable's drawings of Mistley Quay, on two of them, the boat in the foreground has been identified as the family's vessel 'Balloon'.

Two of the yards on the 1778 map were rented by Golding (shown as Golden) Constable from Richard Rigby (2nd).
