A very fine example of Swiss Black Forest carved clock. Hand Carved walnut, spring driven, time and strike, foliate mantel clock with hand-painted Edelweiss mountain flowers, French made the movement, carved in Switzerland, circa late 19th century. A walnut mantel clock case with a plethora of mountain flowers, leaves and vines covering the upper surface of the case, parts of it ebonized or heavily lacquered. On the case facade, there is a glazed beaded brass ornate bezel surrounded by 21 individual ovals painted plaques, each with an Edelweiss flower with its white leaves and prickly clustered spikelet-florets at the centre. The carved areas and dial rest on a knurled edge wooden platform. Below there is a deep carved base with floral carvings over a narrow type of dentil moulding with the base sitting flat to the surface. At the back one can appreciate the black walnut wood with the brownish-black spots and there is a sliding panel to expose the movement compartment. Dial: White porcelain dial with Roman hours, bar minutes, Brocot aperture @12 for altering the speed of the movement and steel Breguet hands.
