Our Story

The Natural Workshop was set up in 2013 by Michelle in our garage. Child care was expensive and we needed a way for her to earn a wage whilst still being able to help raise our children. The business grew from strength to strength and in July 2017 we took on our fi

rst real business premises. Since then we have expanded and I left my full time job as a Surveyor in May 2018 to work full time as a partner in the business. We work hard to have the right work life balance between running a small business and being there for our children. Since opening our doors, we’ve been committed to providing service of the highest quality, paying particular attention to working efficiently while keeping the lines of communication with our clients clear and concise. We have a fully kitted out workshop and have years of woodworking experience, because of this we are able to give a well rounded approach to your product needs and fully understand how to approach your design ideas.

We work with private individuals, small and big businesses alike and we are happy to accommodate any sized order that you might have, from a single unit all the way up to 1000`s of units being required. Our mission at The Natural Workshop is simple: to provide high-quality services in a timely manner. Our team caters to each project’s specific needs to ensure excellence. We hope you’ll find what you’re looking for. For more information or general inquiries, feel free to get in touch today.

Trimming the ribs for one of our custom garden pods.

Each rib is CNC cut, then laminated together to create a 36mm thick structural section.

Strong, stable, and capable of creating curves that would be difficult from solid timber.

A lot of work goes into the bits most people never see!

Most people think earning more in the trades comes down to becoming better at the trade and I used to think the same....

Work harder.
Start earlier.
Finish later.
Buy better gear.

The problem is that being a good tradesman and running a profitable business are two completely different skills.

I've met incredibly skilled people over the years who can build almost anything, yet still struggle financially.

The trades are full of people who know how to build.

Far fewer know how to price, sell, market and run a business.

What's your opinion?

Do tradesmen have a skills problem or a business problem?

Adding those all important finishing touches to the pod using the Trend T4...

There's something special about working with a slab like this.

This one started life as a rough 8ft ash board. We flattened it, sanded it, engraved the company logo and then brought the grain to life before it headed off to its new home.

My favourite moment is always that first wipe of water across the surface.

One second it looks fairly ordinary...

The next, the grain jumps out and you get a glimpse of what the finished piece is going to look like. 👌

A lot of work goes into projects like this, but seeing the finished sign on the wall makes it worth it.

What do you reckon... natural timber, or would you have painted the whole thing? 👀

Can you see it 👀

So this is what happens when you try to mod a tool....but then cheap out on the mod 🤣

For some (unknown) reason, with all of the Birch Ply, Hardwood Ply and MDF I have in the shop, I decided the best thing to use when creating a false top for the router table...was....hardboard 🤦‍♂️

Not quite sure where that idea came from, maybe I was hot, maybe I was tired....or maybe just a little stupid 🤣

Regardless, lesson learned, dont cheap out when making mods or building jigs....its just not worth it 🤷‍♂️

MDF is a bit of a dream material if Im honest...what do you think?

Now, dont get me wrong, it needs to be a good quality MDF, ideally MR MDF, but its stable, paints well, easy to machine and (usually) stays flat.

Whats your favourite material to work with?

A lot of people know us for the CNC router and laser cutter, but what I love is the variety.

One day we're cutting tiny 3mm letters and detailed parts.

The next we're making letters bigger than people. 😁

Over the years we've produced everything from giant event lettering for Girton College's 150th celebrations to huge signs for Food & Fuel Live, along with hundreds of custom projects for businesses, designers and private clients.

From a single sheet of MDF or plywood to a finished installation, it's always pretty satisfying watching it come together.

Big, small, painted, raw, indoor or outdoor... if it starts as a flat sheet, there's a good chance we can make it.

What's the biggest sign or display you've ever seen in person?
