Bathrooms may be one of the smallest rooms in the home, but they're often one of the most complex to get right.
I'm currently working on a couple of bathroom projects, including this one. My client was working to a tight deadline and feeling overwhelmed by the number of decisions involved. While it's easy to focus on the beautiful finishes, the success of a bathroom starts long before the tiles and brassware are chosen.
The layout is everything.
Before designing the aesthetics, it's important to consider:
✨ Can the existing fixtures remain where they are, or will they need relocating?
✨ What additional plumbing work will be required?
✨ How will waste pipes be concealed?
✨ Will there be sufficient storage?
✨ How will the space function day to day?
A few of my top bathroom tips:
Hardware finishes matter
There are endless options available, from chrome and nickel to brass, bronze and black. Quality can vary significantly, so investing in well-made brassware is always worthwhile. It will perform better, age more gracefully and stand the test of time.
And yes, you can absolutely mix metal finishes. In fact, I often encourage it. Brass and bronze work beautifully together and create a more layered, considered look than relying on a single finish throughout.
Don't underestimate lighting
Good bathroom lighting isn't just practical—it's transformative. I always recommend a layered lighting scheme, combining functional task lighting with softer ambient lighting to create a space that feels both beautiful and relaxing.
The more bathrooms I design, the more I realise how much there is to consider. I think a bathroom design blog may be next on my list!
