There is, dare I say it, a slight chill in the air during the morning harvests. The ‘ber months are here. It is the season of Dahlias, Zinnias, Asters, textural grasses, foliage and all the dried flowers.

After a challenging summer and despite our reduced availability, we continue to nurture and cut flowers for florists, DIY wedding flowers, gift bouquets, farm bunches and buckets of seasonal blooms for all sorts of events.

Life has become a lot easier on the flower farm after an abundance of rain. So nice to get some evenings back after many months spent watering.

Nearly recovered from last week’s crazy - Looking forward to Shepton Sunday Market this weekend and we are also gearing up for the next round of DIY event flowers.

Last week in pictures…

1. A big ‘ol DIY wedding flower order where, with the help of other growers (thank you to Bohemian Blooms, Root Connections & Tor View Flowers), we managed to curate some stunning buckets for this really lovely couple who had the most amazing ‘can-do’ attitude and completely took it in their stride when their field tour was more flowers gone to seed than an abundance of flowers in bloom. Congratulations to D&C 🥂

2. Stressed trees and brown grass. The hens have loved the abundance of windfall plums.

3. DIY wedding numero 2 for decorating a barn and I was so happy to be able to squeeze this one in. Again the loveliest of couples who just wanted ‘a load of locally grown flowers’ 🙏🏻 Always happy to oblige with a request like this xx

4. Hawthorn berries. The flower farm is looking very autumnal!

5. More DIY party blooms for a new grandson celebration.

6. Finished off with a quick weekend away and much needed family time to celebrate our eldests amazing GCSE results. Very very proud 🥲

Still got flowers (just!) AND still smiling despite it being a very challenging season.

BUT, more importantly, let’s chat about your flowers…

Did you know, when I cut stems for your gift bouquets, farm bunches, DIY weddings or florist’s buckets, I don’t pick specific varieties from the same old boring check list. I look at texture, structure, form, colour and tone. Each selection is treated like creating a piece of art, which brings me so much joy!

No two bouquets or ‘grower’s choice’ buckets will ever look the same and will always change from week to week, which is what true seasonality should be.

When you buy flowers from this Somerset flower farm you will never receive:

❎ Anything that resembles a supermarket flower eg. Gerberas, spray chrysanthemums, lilies or carnations.

There’s nothing wrong with these flowers, they are beautiful - like all flowers, I just don’t grow them here and they aren’t my style.

Alternatively, what you will receive is:

✅ Flouncy, bouncy ruffly ness, oooos and ahhhhhs, twiddly bits, whimsy, structure, stems which aren’t perfectly straight and all the texture and scents!

Life lately:
A forced slower pace this August due to the many heatwaves, the school holidays and sad life events.

Production is a fraction of what it should be for August, and there is much less flowering on the farm compared to last year, when we were growing on a 1/5 of what we have now.

I made the tough decision to stop our wholesale availability a few weeks ago and have reduced our retail availability massively so I don’t have to keep saying ‘no sorry!’ to requests from you lovely lot.

Who knew that one person can’t do it all?! 😂

A busy rest of August and September coming up with several DIY weddings to cut for. Massively grateful for collaboration with other local flower farms over the next few weeks, which is going to help take the stress away whilst we wait for the much needed rain and our dahlias to get a wiggle on!

POV: You love the idea of creating your own wedding flowers and want all the soft, romantic, locally grown flowers for your August wedding in Somerset!

These buckets full of DIY wedding flowers for an intimate ceremony contained all the seasonal whimsy ~

• Pretty pom pom dahlias
• Beautiful zinnias in soft pinks, corals and whites
• Delicate pink, pale yellow and white cosmos to create airy movement
• Gaura (aptly named ‘the bride’) with its delicate white petals and pink buds
• Statice in lavender, apricot and pale yellows
• Grasses for textural interest
• Flowering mint for scented foliage
• Fennel for a natural meadow feel
• Eucalyptus for its scent and structure to bring the bridal bouquet together.

Going into what feels like our 1 billionth heatwave this season and we still have flowers coming out of the flower field… just!

Much less than there should be for August, but there are definitely some superstars soldiering on - Zinnia, strawflower, erynigium, scented herbs and lovely grasses to name a few.

These bunches full of all the finest on the flower farm can be found Zen Rebel Garden Cafe on Midsomer Norton High Street.

They also double up as great bunches for drying! Just one fresh drop this week, so grab them quick as they sold out last week.

Flower farm bunches (as well as buckets of flowers and luxury bouquets!) can also be ordered via the online flower shop for collection from the flower farm - Tuesday - Saturday (links in bio ⬆️ )
