Homestead Creative Hi I’m Karen, an Orcadian based in Mirfield, West Yorkshire. I make beautiful handmade Footstools and Wall Hangings. Commissions welcome 😊 We love chairs!

We love to breathe life into tired old chairs with beautiful fabrics and reinvigourated woodwork. Homestead Upholstery is a small but developing upholstery business based in Mirfield, West Yorkshire. It was set up in 2014 by Karen Knowles who is passionate about chairs. We specialise in taking unloved vintage and retro chairs and giving them a new life by bringing them right back up to date withou

t losing their original charm. We strip them back to the frame removing old fabric and any tired fillings. We give the woodwork some TLC with lovely rich wax then build them back up again using high quality materials. Finally (and most importantly), we add gorgeous fabrics to create beautiful one off chairs. Have a look at our gallery to see some of the work we have done.

Sorry I’ve been a bit quiet. I’m knee deep in school summer holidays so there is little time for work 😞 I did make some progress on the puffins though.

It’s today!

These furry dudes bring me so much joy. I just love them so much!

We are on the road home from Orkney today after a lovely week. It’s always so hard leaving my family and friends but knowing I’ll see Honey, Hector and Hilda today makes it a little easier!

The birds are made using Harris Tweed and they are stitched onto fabulous Ellen Baker fabric.

How fabulous is this peedie oystercatcher? It’s made by the super talented Jacqui from Jacqui Double

I was so pleased when I asked her to make me an oystercatcher and she said she was open to swaps and loved my hangers!

He’s just perfect and the detail is exquisite - just look at those feet and tail feathers!

In return I made Jacqui an ‘ocean vibes’ wall hanging. What a joy it was to be able to make this trade. Please check out her page and give her a follow. Her creations are wonderful!

Here’s a couple of commissions I did a peedie while ago but I haven’t shared yet.

They were both created to celebrate special birthdays and both feature the Boardhouse Loch in Birsay, Orkney.

It’s always such an honour when folk trust me to capture a special place or make something to celebrate a special occasion 🥰

How’s everyone today?

I had a little apprentice at Homestead HQ today. He was a whizz at pressing the sewing machine pedal and choosing the colours of tweed and thread!

He made a puffin cushion with a handy carry handle. Isn’t it awesome? I better watch out or I’ll be out of a job soon! Or maybe I’ll start kids sewing classes 🤔

I’m a little bit obsessed with oyster catchers .. can you tell? 😆

This peedie collection contains work by the wonderful Jon Thompson and Lesley Murdoch. A painting power couple. Lesley is a big miss 🥰

There’s also pieces by the lovely Liz Toole, Jane James coastal ceramics and Janine Burrows Studio. Fabulous!

I’ve rather cheekily included by own little oyster catcher hanger in this lovely collection. It’s an original piece of textile art made from Harris Tweed and fabric from the wonderful Ellen Baker. It’s hung on a piece of Orkney driftwood.

I’ll me making a few more peedie bird hangers so watch this space 👀
