Join us for a two-part raku course at Ram Ceramic Studio in Morecambe, where you will discover the magic of raku firing.
Raku is a rapid-firing method that originated in Japan in the 16th century. It involves removing the pottery from the kiln while it is red-hot and placing it in a container with combustible materials, such as sawdust, paper, or leaves. This creates a reduction atmosphere that results in crackled glazes, metallic effects, and smoky patterns. It produces wonderfully colourful, lustrous reds, copper, blues and greens. It promises to be a memorable experience at Ram Ceramic Studio. No experience necessary!
The course is split into two sessions. Session 1 is a 3 hour guided hand building workshop where you will be
Forming one or two pots with raku clay
Applying texture
Finishing and setting
Taking a short break in the middle for tea and cake.
Session 2 is a 3 hour workshop on a Saturday 24 February afternoon in a unique setting experiencing Raku firing on the beach. All pots will be fired to 1000 Deg C
They will then be removed from the kiln whilst red hot with tongs, placed in a reduction bin filled with straw or wood chip and allowed to cool to create the final pieces.
