Choosing a kitchen colour is about more than simply picking a shade you love. The most considered schemes take into account the whole space. Before settling on your final colour, here are five things worth considering.
Think about the natural light your kitchen receives throughout the day. A north-facing room can make colours appear cooler and slightly darker, while south-facing spaces tend to bring out warmer tones. Always consider how your chosen colour will look in the actual light of your room, not just on a sample card.
Consider how you want your cabinetry and worktop to work together. Do you want them to blend quietly into one another, or is one going to take centre stage? If your worktop has lots of movement, veining or character, a more understated cabinetry colour can give it space to shine and vice versa.
Your flooring can completely change how a kitchen colour feels. Lighter floors can lift the space, while warmer or deeper tones can create a cosier atmosphere. Look for enough contrast between the floor and cabinetry so the two don’t disappear into one another.
Think beyond the kitchen itself. What rooms can you see from the space, and how do the colours flow between them? Everything doesn’t need to match, but repeating similar tones, materials or undertones can help the whole home feel considered and cohesive.
Your hardware can subtly change the direction of a colour scheme. Cooler finishes such as chrome, polished nickel or stainless steel can complement cooler palettes, while aged brass, bronze and warmer metals can bring warmth to a space. Consider the overall undertone before choosing the finishing touch.
