I recently created this Guinness piece, Guinness No.12, as a commission. And it is now in its new home in London. It’s always such a privilege to work with someone to create a bespoke canvas.

If you haven’t noticed already, I love painting pints of Guinness. Each piece in the series shares the same subject, but no two are the same. The smallest shift in light, tone, or the way the foam settles on the glass completely changes the mood of the painting, giving each one its own quiet character.

Happy International Women’s Day 🙌

Today feels like a good moment to reintroduce myself. I’m Hannah O'Hagan, an award-winning figurative oil painter based in Belfast.

Working primarily in oils, my practice explores the quiet beauty of everyday life, and I am endlessly inspired by the cultural fabric of Ireland.

Over the past few years my life has changed in so many ways. My direction of travel and my priorities have shifted. While navigating those changes, and life as a new mum to Finn and Harper, art has remained the constant. It has been both an escape and something that is entirely mine.

Since starting to share my work publicly, I’ve been incredibly grateful for the opportunities that have followed, including being selected for the RA Summer Exhibition last year, exhibiting at the in London as part of the ING Discerning exhibition, and being featured on The One Show.

Today feels like the beginning of a new chapter in my journey as an artist, and I’m excited to see where it leads and to share that with you.

Thank you to everyone who has followed along and supported my work so far. It means so much!

I'm opening a small number of commission slots for anyone who would love an original oil painting. Whether that's a Guinness piece, or a subject that holds special meaning for you.

This wee commission, Guinness No.11, was delivered to Australia, just in time for Christmas 🎄 🇦🇺

Simply get in touch and we can talk through your idea together, and I’ll create a piece in my signature style that’s completely unique to you.

I bought the paper for these pieces before Christmas last year, thinking that creating a few simple charcoal sketches to hang above my dining table would be a nice wee project for the period in between Christmas and New Year.

A year later and I finally got them up on the wall just in time for this Christmas.

The first drawing is a Cooktown Orchid, the flower of Queensland, where my husband and I met. The second the Doagh Holestone, where we got engaged. And the third is the flax flower, the flower of Ulster, where we live now.

Simple drawings, but full of memory, place, and meaning.

Thank you to Anthony Neeson, editor of the Andersonstown News for featuring my recent success with Go Garage being selected for this year's ING Discerning Eye Exhibition 🖼

I captured the reference photo for Go Garage when walking up the Antrim Road, in Belfast, with my two children. You could feel the rain coming. The sky turned a deep blue, and a dramatic cloud formed right over the garage, making the signage almost glow against the sky.

For me, this painting is about those small, ordinary moments that become unexpectedly striking. And to have a scene from just down the street recognised in such a respected exhibition means the world 👩‍🎨🍾

A huge thank you to the team at Andersonstown News for their contined support and again to Richard Ansett for selecting Go Garage for Exhibition 🎨

ING Discerning Eye online exhibition runs until 31 December 🎁

NORTH Belfast-based artist Hannah O’Hagan has been selected for this year’s ING Discerning Eye Exhibition – one of the UK’s most respected open call exhibitions, held annually at the Mall Galleries in London.

On my very quick trip to London for the ING Discerning Eye Private View, I finally managed to visit the National Gallery 🖼

The first painting I came across was Monet’s The Water-Lily Pond. I’ve seen this painting in books and online countless times, but nothing prepared me for seeing it in person. Being too excited and forgetting to pick up a gallery map didn't help 😊

I was completely awestruck. And, if I’m honest, a little emotional. As I dandered from room to room, taking in work by Van Gogh, Cézanne, Picasso and Matisse, to name a few, I felt so grateful that art is part of my life. I love everything about it, the history, the theory, but most of all the way it makes me feel. When I’m focused on art, especially during stressful times, everything slows down and softens.

With life getting busier in the run-up to Christmas, it feels more important than ever to carve out those wee moments for yourself. Everyone has their own way of switching off, but I couldn’t recommend popping into a gallery or sitting down to paint more 👩‍🎨
