Mc Nulty Smyth Associates

Mc Nulty Smyth Associates Mc Nulty Smyth Associates, Architects & Engineers, was founded in 2009. We passionately believe that we shape our buildings and thereafter they shape us.

So Mc Nulty Smyth focus on creating beautiful, bright, comfortable, energy efficient buildings. Uniquely for domestic architecture, Mc Nulty Smyth combine engineering and architecture at the inception of the project. This allows for a holistic approach, and is more economical for the client, with the most cost effective structural approach integrated from the start.

Which would you choose?

Same space.
Same layout, lighting and materials.
Just a subtle shift in wall tone and how the tile is used.

There are three variations here — each testing proportion, colour and material balance.

Renders allow us to explore finishes and lighting early in the design process.
AI helps us test different bathroom design approaches, while design judgement on what works for the particular house remains key.

Which option feels right to you?

Soft curves.
Concealed storage.
A hallway designed as part of the architecture, not left over from it.

The curved balustrade softens the transition at the top of the stair and improves flow through the landing.

Carefully detailed wall panelling conceals doors and full-height storage, allowing the hallway to remain calm, ordered, and visually clean.

Our bespoke residential architecture is thoughtful and often quiet.
But it’s always deliberate.

End of a busy year.

If I’ve been a little less active on Instagram lately, it’s because most spare hours this year have gone into our own self-build (Tirzah Retreat House)- being on site, making decisions, and living the same process our clients do.

It’s a reminder to us of just how all-consuming building your home can be, and why clarity, calm thinking and considered design really matter when you’re in it.

From experience, I know this is the point where things usually begin to ease slightly. When they do, I’ll share more — both new projects taking shape and glimpses of our own build along the way.

Wishing you a peaceful Christmas and a slower few days wherever you are.

A quiet kind of luxury.

A softly arched hallway, oak stair, and marble guest bathroom — part of a new home nearing completion on site.

Shared by our thoughtful client, this photo captures one of those in-between spaces where calm and detail come together.

None of this happens by accident — every curve and junction was drawn up and imagined early, as part of the tender documents.

A different tone to the rural home we recently shared in The Journal — but just as intentional.

No ‘house style’ here…
See what I did there? 😉

Just carefully designed homes — shaped by context, light, and the people who’ll live in them.

Planning your own home and value this kind of attention to detail?
Save this - or get in touch if you’d like to talk.

👇One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned as a designer of bespoke homes:

Invest time at the design stage, and keep things ‘fluid’ and open to development - we do this by sketching possibilities by hand. Take the time to explore and test out the right solution.

🏡✏️ Always keeping the importance of spending enough time at design stage in mind, we start the journey of designing your home where creativity is not limited. Guided by sketches and fueled by inspiration references and images, our clients then see the right design for their home fully explored, before we move to more formal computer drawings.

Remember- Take the time on design!

We’re thrilled to see a rural home we designed featured in Allianz Home Magazine this week — a contemporary take on traditional Irish forms, designed to sit lightly in its setting while offering long-term comfort, character, and performance.

Rooted in the language of barns and vernacular buildings — with natural stone, cedar, and steel — this home reflects a deep respect for place and landscape, brought together with precision and restraint.

Thank you to for the thoughtful piece.

“Concrete stairs can never look elegant” — or can they?

One of my favourite moments so far from the making of Tirzah House: the stairs being craned in and placed.

The raw concrete, the weight, the precision — every junction had to line up just right.

Even unfinished, it already shaped the hallway around it.
The finished detail, shown in the renders at the end — oak-wrapped treads, clean lines, soft shadows — is all about quiet restraint.
Simple in appearance, but it takes real precision to get that kind of calm clarity.

Insta pulled together this reel from recent stories—and honestly, it gave me such a lift. Seeing how many design decisions and details we’ve worked through on our own home so far really puts things in perspective.

Every new build, renovation, or house design project is full of layers—something I’m always guiding clients through—but living it ourselves is a whole different experience. It’s a reminder of just how many moving parts go into creating a home that feels right.

Plenty more still to come on our self-build journey.

If you’re planning to design, build, or renovate your home—and looking for an architect who understands every step (because we’re living it too!)—I hope following along gives you some insight and inspiration. We work with clients throughout Ireland and beyond, with remote design options available too.

Really appreciate all the support, advice, and messages so far!

From structure to sanctuary—watch our own home take shape.

Right now, this family room is all about form, but soon, texture, warmth, and carefully chosen materials will bring it to life. Designed to frame the view and feel deeply connected to its surroundings, it’s a space where every detail is considered.

It’s a surreal stage—when it’s all grey block and scaffolding, but we can already picture the finished space. We’re excited to be sharing this journey, taking you from 3D vision to reality, and showing the layers that will make this house our home.

Follow along as we bring it to life!
