It was challenging task to reuse the stained glass from an old internal screen & encapsulate it into new glazed units. Real craftsmanship, patience & attention to detail was required. The drawings are only the beginning.

A real pleasure to revisit this Arts & Crafts home in the Hazelwood Conservation Area today, we were delighted to see it turned out so well.

We provided the initial designs, 3D modelling, planning and building warrant approvals, so it was wonderful to return and see how the project had evolved. The client has done a fantastic job bringing everything together, particularly the bold colour palette inspired by the original stained glass windows, which gives the house so much warmth and character.

The refurbishment included relocating the kitchen to create a more generous galley space, opening up the ground floor, and bringing the utility indoors from its former outdoor store. Historic features have been carefully respected throughout, with the original stained glass encapsulated within new double-glazed sash and case windows to improve comfort and energy efficiency while preserving the home’s character.

We were recently commissioned to prepare initial design layouts for the internal alterations and fit-out of this remarkably spacious ground-floor apartment on Barcapel Avenue, Newton Mearns.

The development occupies the former grounds of Barcapel House (see last slide) a grand Victorian mansion set within approximately 11 acres of landscaped gardens. Sadly, the house was destroyed by fire in 1965 following an accident during roof repair works involving a blowtorch!

A charming piece of local history suggests that some of the earliest tomatoes grown in Newton Mearns were cultivated here 🍅

The luxury apartments that now occupy the site enjoy a unique setting, and we were genuinely blown away by the scale and proportions of this home.

We’ve yet to uncover who designed this so if anyone knows more about its architectural history, we’d love to hear from you.

Two weeks in and great progress on site with the retrofit of this 1960s extension, which was built using an unusual combination of predominantly timber-framed construction with cavity brick end gable walls.

Rather than demolishing and rebuilding, we chose to retain the existing structure, strip it back, upgrade the building fabric and install a completely new insulated envelope and warm roof. The original construction presented a number of challenges, (including 7 metres of single glazing holding up the roof!), but also a fantastic opportunity to reuse what was already there and significantly improve its performance.

The transformation is already taking shape, with the new structure, breather membrane and cladding build-up progressing rapidly. Parts of the north-facing garden elevation have been infilled to reduce heat loss and improve the overall thermal performance of the building.

Next up is completion of the new warm roof and installation of the triple-glazed windows.

Projects like this demonstrate how thoughtful retrofit can extend the life of existing buildings while reducing waste, retaining embodied carbon and delivering a more comfortable, energy-efficient home.

Making great progress on this conservatory replacement project in Newton Mearns, thanks to 💪

The existing conservatory had reached the end of its life and, after exploring various design options alongside budget considerations, we decided to work with the existing footprint. By retaining the existing foundations, substructure, floor joists and parts of the external walls, we’ve been able to significantly reduce demolition waste and embodied carbon while creating a completely new highly insulated timber kit extension above.

Internally, part of the original rear wall has been removed to form a new open-plan kitchen and dining space, alongside a separate utility room.

The new extension is designed to create a brighter, more comfortable, and better connected living space for the family, while improving thermal performance and usability throughout the year.

Projects like this are a reminder that thoughtful alterations to existing homes can make a huge difference to how people experience their everyday spaces. There’s something deeply rewarding about giving an existing structure a second life.

Every retained wall, repaired structure, and carefully adapted space carries forward the memory of a place while reducing waste, conserving embodied carbon, and creating architecture with real continuity.

Good sustainable design isn’t always about building new. Often, it’s about recognising the value that already exists and designing with care, restraint, and imagination.

One of three projects starting on site next month. This one focuses on the retrofit of an existing 1960s rear extension, re-working the structure internally to unlock a generous open-plan kitchen and dining space. Alongside this, a new flat roof, triple-glazed windows, and full insulation to walls, floor and roof will significantly improve performance and comfort.
Externally, the building will be re-clad to give it a cohesive, contemporary identity.
A careful balance of reuse and renewal, improving how the house works today while reducing its long-term energy demand.

Transformation of a 1960s house in Newton Mearns which we secured planning and building warrant approval for.

We’ve revisited the scheme to explore how the original ideas might have developed with continued involvement.

A new two-storey extension introduces first-floor bedrooms above a double garage, with a utility space and rear garden lounge.

The existing house has been reconfigured to create a more open-plan layout, strengthening the connection to the garden and surrounding landscape.

A quiet balance of renewal and continuity.
