From 1990s double garage to a Usonian-inspired garden living space 🌿

A quick look into the process of converting this double garage into a bright living and dining space tied directly to a new shaded terrace with a cantilevered canopy looking out towards a mature garden setting.

💡Rethinking the Footprint: Instead of basic door infills, we extended the building structure outward to create a low, horizontal extension into the site.

☀️ Passive Comfort & Canopy: Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian architecture, we added a deep cantilevered overhang. It frames the terrace while providing key solar shading to prevent summer overheating.

🧱 Material Continuity: Rather than fighting the existing 1990s red brick and mahogany soffits, we embraced them, specifying dark red timber glazing, terracotta quarry tiles, and custom rainwater goods for a cohesive, rich palette.

Popped back to Moffat yesterday to see the fencing, external lighting and landscaping completed at this double house extension. Views from both sides of the fence.

And a look at progress on Amanda’s double extension project in rural Beeswing.

The zinc roofing is coming along really well, with the garage conversion on the left and the new sunroom on the right. We’re looking forward to seeing the zinc finished and getting the scaffolding down.

The contractor moved inside this week to start on the internal alterations, opening up the connection into the sunroom alongside internal alterations and fit-outs for the new kitchen, utility, cloakroom, and shower room.

Spent yesterday morning in Dumfries running through the snagging list for this bungalow retrofit and garage conversion. As a husband and wife practice who handle separate projects, it’s rare for us both to be on site together, so it was a nice change. Really pleased with how the tiled terrace and zinc canopy came together alongside the existing brickwork and mahogany stained timber. We look forward to getting some proper photography soon!

It was challenging task to reuse the stained glass from an old internal screen & encapsulate it into new glazed units. Real craftsmanship, patience & attention to detail was required. The drawings are only the beginning.

A real pleasure to revisit this Arts & Crafts home in the Hazelwood Conservation Area today, we were delighted to see it turned out so well.

We provided the initial designs, 3D modelling, planning and building warrant approvals, so it was wonderful to return and see how the project had evolved. The client has done a fantastic job bringing everything together, particularly the bold colour palette inspired by the original stained glass windows, which gives the house so much warmth and character.

The refurbishment included relocating the kitchen to create a more generous galley space, opening up the ground floor, and bringing the utility indoors from its former outdoor store. Historic features have been carefully respected throughout, with the original stained glass encapsulated within new double-glazed sash and case windows to improve comfort and energy efficiency while preserving the home’s character.

We were recently commissioned to prepare initial design layouts for the internal alterations and fit-out of this remarkably spacious ground-floor apartment on Barcapel Avenue, Newton Mearns.

The development occupies the former grounds of Barcapel House (see last slide) a grand Victorian mansion set within approximately 11 acres of landscaped gardens. Sadly, the house was destroyed by fire in 1965 following an accident during roof repair works involving a blowtorch!

A charming piece of local history suggests that some of the earliest tomatoes grown in Newton Mearns were cultivated here 🍅

The luxury apartments that now occupy the site enjoy a unique setting, and we were genuinely blown away by the scale and proportions of this home.

We’ve yet to uncover who designed this so if anyone knows more about its architectural history, we’d love to hear from you.
