The difference between a garden that feels chaotic… and one that feels calm?

Cohesion

And it’s not about spending more money or ripping everything out.
It’s about repeating, simplifying, and being a little more intentional with what you choose.

Start small. One bed. One palette. One repeated plant.

That’s how it begins...

For those following along with my trampoline zone overhaul in the garden...making a massive metal trampoline feel like part of the garden is not the only problem.

This corner doesn’t get full sun - and the trampoline naturally dominates it.

So instead of trying to hide it or work against it, I’m leaning into softer, shade-tolerant planting to help it settle into the space.

Think layers of foliage, gentle movement, and a more relaxed, natural feel.

Having a shady spot in your garden doesn't mean it needs to be ignored...a shady area is less about creating a showpiece - and more about creating somewhere that invites you to pause, maybe sit (or swing if you have space for a hammock) and relax.

I’ll share the full planting as it evolves...

The easiest way to create a new flower bed!

I said yesterday that I would upload a video of me creating a no dig bed…here it is.

It took 12.5 minutes in total! I’m going to add a little more compost after it settles to raise the level a bit.

What this will do is kill off the grass and any annual weeds underneath the cardboard. Perennial weeds may still make it through but they will be weaker and more easily managed…

…a great way to add a flower bed, particularly in a new build garden which may not have good soil health or depth.

No dig beds are all the rage...but they are popular for a reason...
..they are really easy to do!

They are also good for the ecology of your soil as you don't disturb what is there to build a new bed...you basically build on top of the ground.

I'll pop up a timelapse video of how I did mine and you can see how quick it is!

Well, now that I have made the decision to tackle the trampoline zone of the garden first I had better come up with a plan!

Lets face it they are not the prettiest of things, but it has to stay.

In my mind I am picturing a flower bed wrapping around the front side...with tall, whimsical planting which will create a secret den type area...think sleeping beauty's castle covered in greenery.

However, I am on a budget so the tall and established planting will have to wait...I will have to start with smaller plants (cheaper to buy) that, with some TLC, will grow and become that whimsical picture in my head (maybe! 😆).

Come back tomorrow to see the best (and easiest) way to start a new flower bed in a new build garden!

If you saw my post on Saturday listing the usual issues found in a new build garden...mine has all of them and these ones on top...

You might think, so why did I buy the house, since I grow flowers for a living, a garden might be pretty important.

I bought it because it reresents a new chapter in my life...and it's got potential (also a bit like my new life 😆)

All of these issues can be overcome...follow along as I tackle each one.

New build gardens - they have their issues...and mine has all of the below:

Poor Soil Quality
The soil is often cheap top soil and is not very deep - underneath that there could just be piles of rubble and rubbish from the build, so plants struggle to survive and anything with deep roots will hit the sub layer very quickly.

Drainage Problems
Water pooling after rain - many new builds lack proper drainage systems.

Tiny or Awkward Layouts
Small plots + odd shapes = limited usability making it hard to design a functional space.

Lack of Privacy
Overlooked by neighbours with fencing and screening often minimal.

The Good News?
All of this CAN be fixed with the right planning and design.
