You probably don’t realise how important you are

We had our best market ever at Romsey yesterday.

It’s been a tough year for flower farmers, but a day like yesterday makes it all worthwhile.

It’s fantastic to have regulars come back time and again to support us – it like meeting up with friends. I had some lovely surprise visits from family and friends. It was also great to see so many new faces buying our flowers, or simply stopping by to tell us how beautiful they were.

You probably don’t realise what a difference this makes to a small business like mine.

So, to everyone who stopped, chatted, bought flowers, came back for more or simply said something kind – thank you. You made my day.

Hopefully, we'll see you all again on 4 October.

All set up and ready in Romsey.

The stand is bursting with freshly picked, locally grown blooms from our flower farm.

We’re here at Hampshire Farmers’ Market in Romsey (in Alma Road car park next to Waitrose) today from 10am–1pm, with bouquets and jam jar flowers ready to take home.

These beauties – and plenty more – are coming to Romsey tomorrow

It’s Hampshire Farmers’ Market in Romsey tomorrow, Sunday 6 September, from 10am–1pm.

I’ll be cutting these gorgeous dahlias, along with plenty more, and picking whatever else is looking its very best on the flower farm right now. They’ll all be made into a lovely selection of freshly picked bouquets and jam jar flowers.

Romsey Farmers’ Market this Sunday

I’ll be back at Romsey Farmers’ Market this Sunday 6 September with buckets full of beautiful, locally grown flowers.

September is such a lovely time on the flower farm. The dahlias and zinnias are peaking and lots of other beds are still bursting with colour.

I’ll have plenty of freshly picked bouquets and bunches with me – with flowers grown here in Wiltshire, picked at just the right stage and arranged in my natural, English country garden style.

One of the best things about having a flower farm…

Through the summer, at least, there are always flowers to give to friends.

These went to one of my favourite people – a wonderful friend of many, many years and an all-round lovely human being – as a little thank you for a delicious dinner.

It’s a great perk of the job to be able to walk out onto the flower farm, pick what’s looking beautiful that day and turn it into a gift for someone you care about.

The biggest myth about British-grown flowers?

That they don’t last very long in the vase.

I’m not quite sure where this idea comes from, because provided flowers are picked at the right stage and properly conditioned, nothing could be further from the truth.

In fact, I quite often have regular customers put off their next order because the flowers they bought from me the week before are still going strong.

Some varieties naturally last longer than others, of course, but being grown locally means flowers reach you incredibly fresh – usually within 24 hours of leaving the field.

And that can mean a surprisingly long vase life.

And when you’re working with British-grown flowers, there’s so much more than colour to play with – different shapes, textures and all those subtle variations that make every bouquet unique.

It’s hard to believe we’re already more than halfway through the British flower season. There are still plenty of beautiful blooms to come, but I know from experience how quickly the time disappears.

Dahlias by the bunch

It’s hard to beat dahlias at this time of year. Each one perfectly formed, with layer upon layer of petals.

I’m picking plenty from the flower farm at the moment, so if you love dahlias as much as I do, you can order a bunch of freshly cut, locally grown dahlias to enjoy at home or give to someone who needs a little flower joy.

Grown here in Wiltshire, picked by hand and about as seasonal as flowers get.

Flowers always bring a little joy

One of the best things about running a flower farm is seeing the smile that flowers bring to people’s faces.

It might be a huge bouquet bought for someone special, a pretty jam jar of seasonal flowers, or simply a cheerful bunch of sunflowers. Big or small, fresh flowers are guaranteed to brighten someone’s day.

And I love knowing that the flowers I’ve grown, picked and arranged here on the farm are heading off to do just that.
