The Birlinn Yarn Company

The Birlinn Yarn Company Yarn and sheepskin products from seafaring Hebridean sheep bred on the Isle of Berneray in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland.

I live on the Isle of Berneray in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. As a family, we run a croft (small holding) with pedigree Hebridean sheep which are a primitive and rare breed indigenous to the islands. Life on the island can be harsh yet stunningly beautiful a place of extremes but I would not have it any other way. When I am not tending sheep, selling yarn or sheepskins, I am making or creative using the ecology, history and culture of the Hebrides as my source of inspiration.

The Seapink are starting on the Berneray cockle strand.

Yesterday we had no internet so I took off on my bike 🚲 across the island.

I lay on the machair and listened to the skylarks. Was buzzed by arctic tern. Enjoyed the tiny viola and daisies dancing in the wind and the seapink on the shore.

So good to get outside … even though it was blustery and cool.

Featured yarns:
Lady’s Smock
Seapink
Cornmarigold
Ocean

Certified by British Wool as authentic Scottish Wool fully traceable to the Outer Hebrides.

The Island and the Forest: A Knitted Correspondence

Erika and Lotta are two of my favourite knitwear designers. Both have designed with Birlinn Yarn shawls, mitts, vests … that have been enjoyed and cherished by many.

So what delight to now stock their joint publication by

“The Island and the Forest is an exchange of letters and knitwear patterns between two Swedish designers: Erika Åberg on the island of Gotland and Lotta H. Löthgren in the forest in the southeast.

The chapters in the book flow through the four elements — earth, water, fire and air — the shifting seasons and the natural world. In their letters, Erika and Lotta reflect on the little things in their life and how they draw out the big questions: meaning, creativity and belonging.

The Island and the Forest includes 12 knitwear patterns designed to be timeless and practical. “The book you’re holding is our attempt at interpreting our surroundings: the landscape, its atmosphere and the weather, in the shape of stitches,” say Erika and Lotta.

12 patterns: 3 sweaters, 2 vests, 1 cardigan, 1 shawl, 1 hat, 1 pair of fingerless mitts, 1 cowl, 1 pair of socks and 1 pair of mittens.

Birlinn Yarn receives British Wool authentic Scottish Wool mark.

It is ten years since we started The Birlinn Yarn Company from our family croft on the Isle of Berneray.

I feel honoured, therefore, to landmark this 10th Birlinn Yarn occasion with being one of the first businesses to be accredited by British Wool as producing authentic Scottish 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Wool and the first to be fully traceable to the Outer Hebrides.

Our accreditation with British 🇬🇧 Wool also ensures that our yarn is sustainable, ethical and responsible by complying with their six pillars of wool production.

The Birlinn Yarn Company is a ‘croft to yarn’ family run business in the Outer Hebrides.

Our yarn is unique, small batch and authentic. By rearing our own pedigree Hebridean sheep and buying our wool locally, we support the crofting culture of the islands and the associated knowledge and skills of small-scale agriculture, land, sea and wildlife, that have been passed down through the generations for hundreds of years.

Our island environment, culture, community and simple way of life are very important to us.

Values that we hope we can share with you through our products.
