Every house on her street had done the same side return extension...

It’s a common move in Islington, open up the back, add square footage and spend six figures doing it.

So my client came to me thinking she probably needed to do the same £150k build, only she didn’t, what she needed was a much smaller yet smarter solution.

What she actually needed was a WC, a small utility space and somewhere to make a coffee in the morning, so we cut a 600mm opening into the wall, extended out minimally with glazing and created a window seat in that space.

A stud wall partitions the front section of the kitchen with a WC on one side and washing machine on the other, all closed off with a pocket door so it disappears entirely.

The result is a vision of a space that does everything she needed it to do, without needing to spend £150k on a build.

This is what function actually means in practice...

Not asking how much space you can add, but instead, asking what the space needs to do and finding the most considered way to make that happen.

If you are wondering whether you really need the extension everyone else is doing, this is what my Your Home Understood sessions are all about because sometimes, the your home might surprise you.

30 years in the same home. Nothing had changed, except them

They wanted something that felt calmer and more functional, without losing the soul of the home they loved.

Together, we reimagined their living room from top to bottom with our 3 stage process...

Stage 1: Vision
→ We reimagined the ground floor layout to restore flow and create better light distribution. The goal was to bring calm, function, and warmth back into the home — without losing its lived-in, personal feel.

Stage 2: Curate
→ We sourced all finishes and furnishings to complement the natural architecture and history of the home. The palette is soft and timeless, layered with texture and subtle contrast to add depth. A standout feature is the new fireplace, designed to feel like it’s always been there — seamlessly integrated yet transformative in how it grounds the living space.

Stage 3: Deliver
→ We managed the entire installation, coordinating trades, deliveries, and styling. Every element was considered for flow and practicality, ensuring the ground floor now feels coherent, welcoming, and quietly elegant.
..giving them a living space that feels warm and timeless, but full of purpose and personality.

And we’re not done as we’re now designing their bedroom to bring that same sense of ease and elegance through the rest of the house.

An architect is not the first person you should call...

Unless you are building a house from the ground up, going straight to an architect before anything else is one of the most common and costly mistakes I see people make.

I work with clients regularly who arrive with full architectural drawings already in hand, plans that have been paid for, revised, discussed at length and often the first thing I have to do (which is never an easy conversation) is tell them that what has been drawn up isn’t quite right.

That the extension they’ve been quoted fifty thousand pounds for might not be necessary
That the plans don’t actually solve the problems the family is living with every day
That the builders haven’t looked at the drawings properly because the drawings don’t yet reflect how the space will actually be used

And the mental load of that moment is enormous...

You’ve already been through the whole process once, the conversations, the decisions, the emotional investment of imagining your home differently and then you have to go back to the beginning.

An architect is brilliant at what they do, but they are not paid to ask you the questions that matter most before a single line is drawn...

How do you actually live in this space?
What isn’t working and why?
What do you need this home to do for you that it isn’t doing right now?

Those questions come first, because the answer to them determines whether you need an architect at all, how much of the building work is actually necessary and what the brief should be before anyone starts drawing.

Get that clarity first and you will save time, money and an enormous amount of unnecessary stress.

That is exactly what my Your Home Understood service is for.

Send me a message if you’d like to find out more.

Most people come to me with Pinterest boards, a few half-finished rooms and a feeling rather than a plan. That is a perfectly good place to start.

I don't have a signature look, so you won't get my taste. I begin with who you are and how you want to feel, then we work out what your home needs to do for you.

It starts with Your Home Understood: a calm, unhurried home visit. What isn't working, what it could be, and a written plan for next steps.

From there, there are three stages.
Vision, where you see it all before anything is bought. Curate, where every product is sourced and specified. Deliver, where I coordinate the work and visit site alongside your builder and trades.

I work in Norwich and across Norfolk, and in London. Many of my clients are in Crouch End, Islington, Haringey and Hackney.

To begin, book Your Home Understood or a discovery call. The link is in my bio.

Less than 2% of social housing comes furnished...

For vulnerable women and children fleeing domestic abuse, being placed into empty social housing leaves them feeling worthless and compounds their trauma.

Buying essential items is also a leading cause of debt for vulnerable families, keeping them in poverty.

Yet, despite this, 22 million pieces of furniture end up in landfill every year, much of which is in new or as new condition.

This is why Furnishing Futures exists, a sustainable solution to two unsustainable problems, that creates healing homes that bring hope and dignity to the women and children who have escaped domestic abuse.

You can’t make good decisions about your home when you’re in survival mode...

The kids, work, elderly relatives, the thing that just landed in your inbox... your brain isn’t built to also think clearly about kitchen layouts and colour palettes.

It physically cannot hold both at once, so it lets one go and it’s never the urgent thing.

This is why so many renovations stall, not because the interest has gone or because it stopped mattering, but because life got in the way in the way it always does...

And the home, which has no deadline, no one chasing it, no immediate consequence, quietly slips back to the bottom of the list.

It isn’t a failure of commitment, it’s just how capacity works.

And this is exactly why having the right support around a renovation changes everything.

Not someone who hands you a mood board and waits for decisions, but someone who holds the process for you when your bandwidth is somewhere else entirely so that when life does settle, even briefly, the momentum is still there.

If you’ve been nodding along, SAVE this and FOLLOW along for part four.

A high-spec new-build in Shoreditch with incredible views, and yet...

No character, no warmth and nowhere to put anything.

This is one of the most common challenges in new-build apartments. The shell is beautiful, but it hasn’t been designed around the person living in it.

Storage is an afterthought, layouts are generic and the space looks the part but doesn’t quite feel like home.

Julie came to us with a clear sense of her own taste — clean lines, natural materials, nothing superfluous — and some key pieces she already loved. The brief was to build around what she had, resolve what wasn’t working and add what was missing without it ever feeling like it had been added.

The bespoke joinery does the quiet heavy lifting here. A full-width plywood headboard that anchors the bedroom and integrates storage without breaking the calm of the room.

A custom desk nook that makes working from home feel considered rather than compromised.

Furniture and lighting chosen to sit alongside her existing pieces as though they’d always been there.

The result is a flat that finally feels like hers...

Functional, yet refined and completely unhurried.

The single most impactful thing I tell almost every client to do first costs nothing...

Pull your sofa OFF the wall.

It sounds too simple, But furniture pushed to the edges of a room is one of the most common reasons a space feels like it isn’t quite working and it’s also one of the easiest things to fix without spending anything.

When furniture sits against the walls, the room scatters and there’s no centre, no zone, no reason for the space to feel connected.

But when you pull it in, even slightly, something shifts and the room suddenly has a heart, sightlines improve and zones emerge naturally.

The space starts to feel like somewhere rather than just a series of things placed around a perimeter.

This project is a newly built family home in Norfolk that is FULL of potential, but without the character that comes with age.

The clients had recently relocated and wanted the interior to echo the feeling of the landscape around them...

Neutrals, green, wood tones, a little warmth and pattern, think outdoors, brought in.

Panelling was introduced throughout to give the rooms something to hold onto, the furniture was pulled away from the walls and into the centre to create proper zones and the dining table was positioned to look out toward the garden, so that cooking and entertaining always happen with that view in the background.

This is the Vision, before anything is bought or built, you need to understand what the space is actually asking for...

And sometimes. it’s asking you to move the sofa off of the wall.

If your rooms feel slightly off and you’re not sure why, then my Your Home Understood Service is the place to start. Comment HOME or find the link in my bio.

There are a lot of things to figure out before you design a home...

Layout. Flow. Storage. Lighting. Colour. Budget. What to keep. What to let go. Which decisions need to happen first and which ones can wait.

But there is really only one thing I need from you at the start.

Tell me how you want to live.

Not what you want it to look like, or which styles you’ve saved or which trends you’re drawn to.

Just how you want to feel when you walk through the front door.

How the mornings should flow.

Where the energy in your home should sit.

What it needs to do for you that it isn’t doing right now.

That conversation is where everything starts.

The other nine things? That’s what I’m here for.
