🧵✨ So… why make lace by hand?

Here at SP Creative Crafts, we’re lucky to be surrounded by some amazing textile history!

Growing up in Calverton — famous for William Lee, inventor of the framework knitting machine — and based in Nottingham, a city famous around the world for its machine-made lace.

So that got me thinking… why, in a place with such a strong history of textile machinery, would we choose to make lace by hand? 🤔

Maybe it’s about holding on to heritage — keeping skills and techniques alive that might otherwise disappear.

Maybe it’s about linking the past with the present — taking inspiration from the lace makers and textile workers who came before us, but using those skills in new and exciting ways.

Or perhaps it’s simply because fashion changes! 💃

Styles change, materials change, tastes change — and handmade lacemaking can change with them. We can experiment, create something completely unique, and make lace that suits today, rather than simply repeating what was done in the past.

And maybe there’s something else too…

Machines can make things quickly and consistently — but what does handmade bring that a machine can’t? ❤️

Morning September- I have just set up the pop-up shop at David Humphreys at Strelley Hall for September, there is range of bobbin lace items including greetings cards at £2.50 each, bookmarks at £8.00 and framed items all individually priced.

I will also be at Strelley Hall on the 12th September with a display and making lace at the heritage makers market

As the World Lace Festival draws to a close, I’ve been enjoying the wonderful photographs appearing across social media — a fabulous record of the creativity, friendship and sheer variety of lace on display.

I was delighted to be invited to take part with the Adventurous Lacemakers, an international group bringing together lacemakers from different countries and traditions. It was a real privilege to be part of such an inspiring community and to see how a shared love of lace can connect people across borders.

One of the highlights was “Pagan Poetry”, created for ALM and featured in the World Lace Festival programme. It was wonderful to see the work come together and to be involved in an event that celebrates lace not simply as a traditional craft, but as an art form capable of telling stories, exploring ideas and bringing people together.

There are so many fabulous images from the festival being shared, and I’m looking forward to revisiting them and discovering pieces I may have missed along the way.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in making the World Lace Festival such a memorable celebration — and especially to the Adventurous Lacemakers for inviting me to be part of it.

Lace truly is an international language. 🧵🌍
