2025 marks 40 years of making pots, I started out in 1985 as a 16 year old apprentice at Appin pottery and spent two short spells at Winchcombe pottery as part of my training and since 1988 I have been here at Argyll pottery .

The first rays of sunlight ever to hit these pots just as they came out the kiln this morning. ( its the simple pleasures in life I find the most rewarding.)

For over 40 years I have been making pots that folk use in their everyday lives. My woodfired pots are not all about how they are fired , more its about giving the pots a gentle warmth to them but not to the extent that the firing is more important than the pot.

Made a start packing the wood kiln, the back stack done and will finish off packing the front stack tomorrow. As you can see from my kiln packs I try to use up all the packing space as firing air to 1300C seems to me to be a waste of time and energy.

These kiln dragons that hold the firing cones are always the last things to be made in the making cycle, now I just have to get two months work to glaze and then hopefully be ready to fire the woodkiln at some point next week. (That's the plan anyway.)

Plates , As a potter who prides himself in making pots that folk use in their everyday lives I do make quite a lot of plates which in fairness are not the most taxing thing to throw but they are the backbone of the range and folk build up sets over time adding all the other pots I make building up sets year on year until they have what they need. There's nothing short term in how I work and on the whole folk don't mind waiting for what they need.

I've been throwing bowls for the last few days, such a simple pot to make as its just a gentle curve finished off with a rim, but like any simple pot you cant hide any mistakes in your throwing as it will be there for all to see. Never mistake the word simple with the word easy, if it was easy then anyone could do it .
