A couple of moody blue cake plates for rainy Sundays like this one. These came out of the little gas kiln last week. White stoneware with high iron slip and chun glaze, fired to cone 10 reduction. These slip tests are a much better fit to the clay body than previous experiments - making progress!

I’m really excited about some of these glaze over high iron slip combination tests that came out of the gas kiln this morning. There’s a bit of crazing (hairline cracks caused by thermal mismatch) that needs to be addressed but overall there’s some great depth of colour and luminosity to these over the white porcelain body.

Here’s another pot in the porcelain clay body I mix up. The colour depends on placement in the kiln, atmosphere and reaction of the surface to the wood ash throughout the five day anagama firing. I love how here it’s taken on a salmon pink sheen and a flickering tongue of flame flashing where the fire has been redirected over a lump of wadding.

Woodfired porcelain mug. Unglazed on the outside, you can see where it picked up a wood ash directional sheen from the five day anagama firing as well as some rich red flashing. This porcelain clay we mix up at Kigbeare is a slight variation on the ‘fine-grained porcelain body’ recipe outlined in Jack Troy’s 1995 book Wood-fired Stoneware and Porcelain. The clay I use has a little extra grolleg china clay and bentonite in ratio to the feldspar and quartz.

Really pleased that this woodfired pancheon mixing bowl has found a new home. I don’t often throw in Doble’s, a stoneware clay which is mined from the St Agnes in Cornwall. The family-run pit had supplied the Leach Pottery with clay since the 1960s. We use it for most student classes at Kigbeare so it’s nice and convenient to be able to have a play and chuck any reclaim in the pug mill - a luxury I dream of one day having for my other clay bodies. As an unblended and unglazed clay body it can go a bit dark and metallic in the anagama firing but responds well to slips and glazes. I really like the contrast of the dark and light here where I’ve used a damp sponge to wipe the white shino glaze off the rim. Definitely going to be making more of these.

Elin Hughes | Woodfiring potter in Devon “Based at Kigbeare Studios on the edge of Dartmoor, Devon, I make gas and woodfired thrown tableware that strives to capture the warmth and groundedness that comes with sharing a meal. Combining soft forms with repetitive patterns, these pots impart a sense of comfort and intimacy.

Megan Flotsam Prints “Megan Hall is a traditional linocut artist and printmaker whose practice celebrates the tactile beauty of hand-carved blocks and ink on paper. Working with time-honoured techniques, she explores texture, mark-making and colour through the reduction method. Inspired by water as both muse and metaphor, her work reflects both movement and stillness.
