🦴 Let’s talk bones…

We get lots of dogs coming in where owners tell us, “He needs strengthening” or “I think he’s lost muscle on that leg.” And they’re absolutely right to be thinking about it as muscles play such an important role in keeping our dogs strong and moving well.

But we also want to talk about the other half of the movement story… the bones! 🦴

Your dog’s bones do so much more than simply hold them up. They provide the framework for the body, protect important organs and give muscles somewhere to attach so they can create movement.

Think about your dog getting up from bed, walking, running, jumping or turning corners. Every one of those movements relies on bones, joints and muscles working together.

The skeleton also plays an important role in weight-bearing, posture and stability. The shape and alignment of the bones help determine how forces travel through the body and how your dog moves.

So when we’re assessing your dog, we’re not just looking at the muscle that may have become weaker. We’re looking at the bigger picture. Bones, joints, muscles and soft tissues all working together.

🦴 Bones provide the framework.
💪 Muscles create the movement.
🦿 Joints allow it to happen.
🐾 And together, they keep your dog moving.

P.S a huge thanks to lovely Viv who is letting us look after ‘Bones’ the skeleton in the clinic. Isn’t he magnificent! 🦴

When was the last time you really looked at your dog’s nails?

It’s easy to think of nail clipping as simply part of grooming, but those little claws can actually have a bigger impact on movement than you might realise.

If nails get too long, they can change the way your dog’s paw sits on the ground. Over time, this can affect how they distribute their weight and move through their toes, feet and limbs.

You might notice things like:

🐾 Nails clicking on the floor
🐾 Nails touching the ground when they’re standing
🐾 A change in the way they walk or stand
🐾 Slipping more on smooth surfaces
🐾 Difficulty getting comfortable or placing their feet normally

And if your dog is already recovering from an injury or surgery, these small changes can be even more important.

So, how often should you clip them?

There’s no magic number because every dog is different. Their nails grow at different rates, and how much they naturally wear down will depend on their lifestyle and the surfaces they walk on. A good habit is to check them every couple of weeks rather than waiting until they look obviously long.

And if you can hear that familiar click, click, click across the kitchen floor… 👀 it might be time for a trim!

People often ask what it’s like to be a canine physiotherapist. 🐾

Our days are filled with hands-on treatment, targeted rehabilitation exercises, electrotherapies, movement assessments, conversations with vets and other professionals, and yes… a fair few late-night emails and late appointments.

But it’s also the emotional side that people don’t always see. It’s the conversations with you, hearing your stories, sharing the highs and lows. When you’re worried, we worry with you. When you’re celebrating progress, we’re celebrating too. And when the time comes to say goodbye to a dog we’ve come to know and love… we feel that loss with you.

Your dogs are part of our week, part of our conversations, and part of why we do what we do 💕

Meet Mr Barry! 🐾💙

Barry came to us following a hemilaminectomy, spinal surgery used to relieve pressure on the spinal cord, often following a slipped or herniated disc.

As part of his rehab, we were able to fit Barry with his very own wheels 🛞, giving him more freedom to get out, exercise and explore. We can also provide braces and other mobility aids where appropriate, tailored to each dog’s needs.

But even without his wheels, Barry has done very well and continues to amaze us with his progress!

He also makes us laugh every single visit, leaving with a cheesy chin and plenty of belly tickles! 😂🧀🐾

🐶 Meet Betty

Betty came to us in May following a fractured patella. Fractures can take time to heal, and physiotherapy can play an important role in the recovery process. Treatment can help support healing, maintain and rebuild muscle strength, improve mobility and gradually restore normal movement, helping patients get back to doing the things they love.

And as if being a physio superstar wasn’t enough… Betty also takes home our Best Dressed Dog Award! 🏆🎩😂

We think you’ll agree, she wears it very well! 💕

What a summer it’s been! ☀️💗

We just want to say a huge thank you for keeping us so wonderfully busy! 🥰 Between the heatwaves, our new air con and everything else summer has thrown at us, we’ve just about made it through! 😂

We’ll be taking a short break from treatments and we will be back from Tuesday 8th September.

In the meantime, our lovely Emma will be behind the scenes, keeping an eye on our emails. You may not always see Emma, but she does so much behind the scenes to help everything run smoothly, so we’re very lucky to have her!

See you all in September! 💕 give all your dogs a cuddle from us 🐶🐾

Nelly may be an older lady, but that doesn’t mean she can’t enjoy her walks! 🐾

This was Nelly on her holiday in the Netherlands 🇳🇱. Her lovely owners made sure she still got out and about, while keeping her comfortable and preventing fatigue and joint pain. When Nelly needs a rest, she gets the VIP treatment in her very own bike stroller! 🥹

As physiotherapists, we always encourage appropriate exercise because it’s all about finding the right balance.

P.s How cute does she look?! 🥰🐶

☀️ 🧊 ANNOUNCEMENT 🧊 ☀️

We are BEYOND pleased to report that we have had industrial air conditioning fitted in the clinic today!

We can all agree this summer has been warmer than all of us have ever intended. Your dog’s comfort in the clinic comes first for us - and we are so pleased to report it’s a chilly 16 degrees! 🌡️ 🧊

As you can see from the pictures, Steph is so happy she could cry happy tears 🥹 … about air conditioning!

A huge thanks to Daniel and Steve for putting us at the top of their list and doing everything they could over the last 10 weeks to make this happen for us. They kindly prioritised the clinic because they knew we were struggling to keep it cool for you all. Without a doubt two incredibly genuine men who have restored Steph’s faith in tradesmen.
