It's nearly tulip bulb planting time.
Daffodils are going in the ground now but my tulips are staying in the bag.
At my cut flower patch in Cumnor, near Oxford, I wait until November to plant tulip bulbs. Tulips are fussier than daffodils. If the soil is still warm, they're more likely to catch tulip fire, a fungal disease that leaves you with distorted, spotty stems. Cooler soil gives them a much better start.
So if you're wondering when to plant tulip bulbs a good rule is to wait until the soil has properly cooled, which is usually November. Daffodils can't wait that long and go in now.
I grow pesticide-free and peat-free, so I let the weather do the work rather than reaching for a spray.
Save this for early November and share it with a friend who's already eyeing up their tulip bulbs.
