I had a few thin squares of lacewood that I struggled to find a use for, but were too lovely to consign to the firewood bag, so they have been lying around for ages. Yesterday I was going through my kit and came across vanity mirror kits that I had bought many years ago when I did craft fairs, so I made one up out of one of the squares. I spent ages trying to sand out the light coloured ring round the wood till I realised it is a lighter coloured layer.

I was asked to make a larger darning disc. This one is 100mm diameter. Who knew beech wood could be so lovely.

I set out to make a carving mallet from a piece of sweet chestnut timber, 300x80x80mm. I made one then looked at the pile of shavings on my shed floor and thought, that is a waste of good timber so, after a bit of judicious measuring and cutting, I was able to make a mallet, four darning discs, four tapestry bobbins and six wedgies (table wedge keyrings) all from the same size piece of timber. Oh and I mustn’t forget the button.
All those items will be available from my Etsy shop, (except the button, buttons are boring to make and there are hundreds available on Etsy) . HighlandWizardCrafts

A bit of a change from my usual turnings. I made this lamp as a wedding present for my Grandson. It is made from a piece of lilac wood that I got many years ago from a garden in Inverness. The bush had been blown over in a storm and the owner was delighted for me to take it away. The wood had many shrinkage cracks which I originally thought about filling with coloured Milliput, but in the end decided to “stich” them with copper staples. I am pleased with the result, and fortunately my grandson and his wife love it.

And what do you do with an unpromising little branch? You make a wood out of it of course. Those small Scandinavian style trees are made from pear wood, they are about 2” high. Some of them will probably have a small screw eye fitted and made into Christmas tree decorations.

This is a new one for me. One of my regular customers, a lovely lady from Northumberland asked me to make a lucet fork for her. Not bad for a first attempt I think. It is made from a very old piece of mahogany.
The photo was taken before the finish had dried properly. (I have just noticed a slight flaw which will need to be sorted before I post it.)

Magic stirry sticks.
My great Grandson, Dante, loves to help his granny make pancakes using “Granny’s magic stirry stick” which is a spurtle I made for her some time ago. Here are two specially for Dante, on the left is one I made from pear wood, the other is made from sycamore by his grandfather. A very good job for your first time woodturning Denis, well done.
