Every growing year has brought its challenges but this year takes the biscuit! I'm certainly not ready to give up yet, but I do have to make some changes. I'm learning a lot at the moment, and my head is buzzing with ideas. I just need to collect them together, and then I'll start sharing them with you.

But the obvious things on the list of things to do are;

1. Improve the soil's ability to hold water by adding organic matter.
2. Grow plants that are drought tolerant (but can cope with wet winters 😬).
3. Add more areas of shade in my full sun field.
4. Look at the way I manage water on-site.

A few photos from the flower farm this week. It's been a week of early starts and late evenings trying to beat the heat. To be honest I think the heat has beaten me.

Not everything will make it, some things are thriving, more lessons to learn.

Fresh flowers you can dry at home so you get to enjoy them twice!

These posies include statice, achillea, billy buttons and strawflowers all of which will dry beautifully, keeping their shape and colour. Simply enjoy them fresh in a vase for a few days and while they're still looking fresh as a daisy, hang them upside down, out of direct sunlight, until they feel papery, them you can enjoy them all over again!

I've been mentally making bouquets with these this morning as I was getting the watering done, I can't wait to get back up the farm this evening to cut them!

The things I imagine you'll notice when you visit the field... versus what you actually notice.

I think you'll see the weeds. You see the flowers.
I think you'll clock the empty bit of bed where the sweet peas have finished. You don't even register it.
I think the wonky rows bother you. Turns out they're part of why people love a real cut flower farm over something too perfect.

Honestly, I spend most of my time out there seeing jobs — what needs weeding, staking, sowing, cutting back, the bits that haven't worked out quite the way I wanted them to. You just see a field full of flowers grown gently, following the season. I'm working on seeing it your way more often, I'm forever having a word with myself!
