Sawmills, Shippons and Slaughterhouses

Atkinson Architects are working hard to conserve a broad range of traditional listed building types across Devon, Cornwall and Somerset.

These historically significant farm buildings are both beautiful and functional - with unique characteristics suited to their original purpose.

We have many live projects at different stages to repair, renovate and provide a new lease of life for former sawmills, shippons, slaughterhouses, c***r presses, watermills, linhays and stables.

South West LABC Awards
Atkinson Architects were announced as winners of the LABC Awards in mid August.

Firstly, Winner of the Construction Specialist of the Year - our senior architectural technologist Dave Humphreys.

This notable award focussed on his skill and experience balancing listed building sensitivities alongside the requirements of current Building Regulations. Oftentimes, these are not happy bedfellows - proving very difficult to reconcile the character of historic building structures with 2024 expectations for insulation, environmental comfort, stability and sustainability.

It is worthy recognition of Dave’s contribution to the practice where he has successfully worked on hundreds of listed buildings across The South West.

Secondly, Highly Commended for Residential Design and Heritage - our project at Lock Cottage, Weir Head, Gunnislake, Cornwall.

This fantastic project on a spectacular World Heritage Ancient Monument Site had some very complex construction details due to the proximity of the tidal river water levels and previous condition of the 18th century stone lock keepers cottage that had become prone to significant flooding.

Taking conceptual design ideas through to construction with beautiful detailing is an aspect of our practice work we are very proud of.
