This British WWII set includes an Avon Mk IV General Service Respirator dated 1937, complete with its breathing hose and a B.W.M. No. 4A filter dated 1942.

Finding it with so much of its original anti-gas equipment still together is far less common.

The range of dates is interesting too. The pieces span several years, showing how equipment could remain in use while individual components were replaced or added during its service life.

Three Bren Mk Is. All from 1941. But look closely and they’re not quite the same.

In this video, Sally compares three wartime Bren guns side by side, showing some of the differences in their stocks, barrels, handles and other details.

Some of these variations may be the result of parts being replaced or changed during their service lives. After decades of use, maintenance and repairs, each example has developed its own story.

They may all be Bren Mk Is from 1941, but putting them together shows just how much variation you can find between individual examples.

Made in 1951, at the height of the early Cold War. 🇷🇺

This Soviet SKS was manufactured at the famous Tula Arsenal and still has matching serial numbers across all visible numbered parts.
Designed by Sergei Simonov, the SKS entered Soviet production in 1949.

Its distinctive features included a fixed 10-round magazine and permanently attached folding bayonet. It was eventually replaced as a frontline Soviet weapon by the AK-47, but remained in service with border, reserve and second-line units for years.

This example is dated 1951, carries the Tula star and comes with its sling and folding bayonet. It has been old-spec deactivated.

Before the Bren became one of Britain’s most famous light machine guns, there were years of testing, changes and trials.

Following the 1930 demonstration, Britain put the Czech prototypes through extensive testing against other designs, including the Vickers-Berthier, Madsen and American BAR. Changes continued until the design met British requirements.

From that process came a small pre-production batch of just 229 guns.

The example Sally is showing here is serial No. 209, one of those 229, and was sent to Northern Ireland for trials.

Before the Bren became one of Britain’s most famous light machine guns, a small number were made in Czechoslovakia for British trials.

This is No. 209 of just 229, made at Brno and sent for testing before full British production began.

Let’s take a quick look at this rare early example.

Over 200 years old and still here to tell a story.

This Georgian miniature dates from around 1800 and shows two young ladies dressed in white, with a lake in the background.

The portrait was painted on porcelain and is signed John Hopper. It also still has its original gilt brass oval frame, decorated with pearls and red glass beads.

Before photography became common, portraits like this were an important way of keeping someone's image and passing it down through a family.

We may never know exactly who these two young women were or what their lives were like, but their portrait has survived for more than two centuries.

A piece of Portuguese military history from 1973. 🇵🇹

This 7.62×51mm G3 dates from July 1973, during the final years of the Portuguese Colonial War.

Manufactured under licence by FMP in Portugal using tooling supplied by Heckler & Koch, the G3 became the standard infantry rifle of the Portuguese Armed Forces and saw extensive service during the conflicts in Africa.

This particular example is marked “G3 FMP 286305, 7/73” and retains its distinctive green plastic furniture, original black metalwork and sling. It also comes with a spare magazine and inert rounds and has been deactivated to current specification.

More than 50 years after it was manufactured, it remains a fascinating survivor from an important chapter of Portuguese military history.
