This one has been dragon on a bit... 😏

Finally completed this commission of a Sapele Dragon with Lichtenberg fractals filled with red w**e resin.

I do love the Dragon as a project once it's complete. As I am sanding it I hate it. I know hate is a strong word but with the Dragon... it's an accurate word 😏

I keep thinking I will find new techniques and approaches for sanding but I never do, it really is all down to time and patience, one of which I don't have.

Anyway she's done and will be dropped off this week. The other in the photo is a Dragon still on the shelf. Sapele facade, Beech body😏, Wenge drawer fronts and Purpleheart drawer pulls.

How many Dragons are too many Dragons. I've a partial completed one I am thinking of putting drawer fronts with copper etched scales on 😱 Also there is the Dragon with wings... but we won't mention that.

A bit of a shout out to the 1972 movie Deliverance starring Burt Reynolds. If you've seen it you will undoubtedly remember the epic dueling banjos scene but for me it's dual not dueling.

I was asked at a market a couple of weeks ago about making a banjo keepsake along the same lines as the violin and guitar I currently make. I had AI render a rights-free drawing I could use and then messed around with it. I made two versions to cover any major setbacks and ended up with the two boxes below.

The first is a Beech body, pyrography burned frets, a Sapele headstock, Ebony pegs and a couple of Purpleheart bridges.

The second version is again a Beech body with a ring of Sapele, the neck is slightly spalted Beech and again a headstock of Sapele. The pegs are Purpleheart this time, again with pyrography frets. This version also has a highly figured Spalted Beech back.

Both have flocked drawers and housings and each has had a couple of coats of Danish Oil.

Which is your favourite? I'll leave you hanging as to which the customer went for πŸ€”

Final day of markets... thank goodness.

I'm going to take a few days off and recuperate. Last night I stayed in a hotel that was 20 miles away because everything was booked for the Great Northern Run. The hotel was full, full I tell ya with runners. This morning as I was getting coffee near the hotel there were runners everywhere.

What fantastic turnout and support for this event.

I wish everyone the best for today's run, the weather looks like its going to be favourable πŸ‘Š

Good luck πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ

And so it begins... the final weekend.

Down here in Newcastle at the Metro Centre this Saturday and Sunday. First time I've set foot in this place and it's massive 😱

Trying a new configuration for the table after Louise did some AI research. I quite like it, busy but not too busy, frames some of the boxes nicely 😁

Let's see what this weekend holds. In all honesty I am just kind of thankful for a couple of days out of the workshop. When there is no endgame it just starts getting to me... hopefully some sales today will be a fitting endgame 😁

Trying to finish as many crafts as possible and these wee critters are the latest installment.

Tanga Tanga on the left and Panga Panga on the right. That's not their names, that's the woods used for the facades. Both exotic African woods. They each have Beech cores and Danish oil and wax finish.

I think wee tipsy looks almost kitten like... but that's just me 🀷

Whatever next πŸ€”

Ok a new version of an existing design. This is a florence box by David Picciuto which has been reworked. A facebook follower suggested altering the heart "like" box into more of an actual heart.

AI went awry when I asked it to alter the design so I resorted to a printed template and tipex. 4 small drawers now like the chambers of the heart. Admittedly the atrium and ventricles are not proportioned properly but does that really matter πŸ€”

It has an Iroko and Sapele facade with a Beech core and is finished with Danish oil and beeswax.

I'm going to contact the follower who came up with the idea and offer her this prototype.

I really quite like it and I'm going to call it Chordae after Chordae Tendineae which are strings that attach to heart valves, I think the source of the saying about pulling someone's heart strings.

Market Dates

So I thought it was time to put up when my next markets are.

I think the Handmade Scotland site does not allow markets to be promoted which I get as the site is meant to focus just on Scottish makers.

First market is 5th & 6th September at the Centre, Livingston. These markets are with The Crafters Roadshow and at this time I am unsure where in the facility the markets are held.

The next market is the following weekend, 12th & 13th September at the Metro Centre in Gateshead.

That same weekend Louise will be hosting a table at St Columba's School, Kilmacolm where my crafts will also be available.

Markets aside, below are a couple of designs I've worked on recently.

The Florence box with Alpi SpA veneer fronts on the drawers. A new wee hedgepig with its wee bairn, both functioning as keepsake boxes. Oh and I'm not sure if I posted wee tipsy earlier as well πŸ€”

The countdown is on. 10... 9... 8... 7...

You get the idea. Two weeks today I have my first market with The Crafters Roadshow at the Livingston Centre and then a week later at the Metro Centre 😱

I've been crazy busy in the workshop trying to get boxes complete while at the same time trying to finish a softwood table for a friend. Although to be honest anyone who gives you a softwood table to repair with resin and then finish shouldn't really be called a friend 🀣

Anyway a couple of new boxes to show prior to the market. The first is the Florence box, a design by David Picciuto. This has a Beech body but the drawers have been veneered with Alpi SpA Sottsass Orange veneer which I had hoped would pop right out, but I'm not sure it worked πŸ€” Maybe if I had used a darker wood like Sapele this would have worked better.

The second is a butterfly box, again Beech body with Sottsass Orange wing panels of veneer. I like it but not sure I LOVE it. The veneer is erratic by design in smaller sections but may be a repeating pattern when scaled up, unlike butterfly wings which I suspect are symmetrical. Again like the Florence, perhaps a darker wood would have provided a better contrast. I used a wee bit of Purpleheart for the body of the butterfly which gives it a wee pop.

Let me know what you think, any feedback before these markets will be greatly appreciated 😁

Wish me luck πŸ˜πŸ‘Š
