Tesco’s flagship sustainability store in Harrogate, Yorkshire, features comprehensive outdoor lighting from Thorlux.

SmartScan-equipped Thorlux Acorn floodlights have been used to light the car park – an appropriate choice for a store where sustainability is a priority. Acorn has achieved an industry-leading TM66 score of 3.1, verified as the highest published score for any luminaire under the LIA/CIBSE certification scheme TSD-012 so far.

With its distinctive, IP66-rated European oak housing, recycled metal parts, and carefully controlled light, Acorn perfectly complements the range of sustainability initiatives Tesco has put in place at its Harrogate store.

Thorlux presents updated and improved versions of its popular Flexline luminaire, providing stylish lighting design options for a range of indoor spaces.

Designed for mounting to an exposed ceiling T-bar, Flexline is a super-narrow linear luminaire with high-efficiency, low-glare optics. It provides discreet, unobtrusive lighting with fast, simple, and secure installation. Furthermore, this updated version offers a range of 600 x 600 squares to match the spacing arrangements of flat panel luminaires.

Used with the complementary Flexview recessed picture luminaire, Flexline provides an impressive lighting solution for teaching spaces, offices, corridors, waiting rooms, break-out spaces, reception areas, retail, and windowless rooms.

Today, Wednesday, 26th August 2026, marks exactly 90 years since the formal incorporation of FW Thorpe Ltd, now known as FW Thorpe Plc, the company behind Thorlux Lighting.

Our founder, Frederick William Thorpe, and his son, Ernest, initially designed and manufactured vitreous steel ‘over-lamp’ reflectors – products that were a runaway success. Early marketing materials promised “FOR EASY MAINTENANCE – THE BEST” – a maxim we still live by today.

Those initial reflectors paved the way for nearly a century of innovation, expansion, and evolution. Thorlux luminaires are now in use all around the world in almost every non-domestic application, including education, healthcare, industrial, rail, and more. Thorlux is based only a few miles from where it was founded in Birmingham, UK; and, after 90 years, Thorlux still makes over 90% of its products in the Midlands.

Thank you to all Thorlux customers, past and present. We remain committed to developing innovative, reliable lighting solutions and providing the expertise and support our customers need, both now and in the future.

Thorlux has recently published an article on the additional complexities of emergency lighting in the healthcare sector.

Hospitals, clinics, and care homes demand dependable emergency lighting to ensure both security and safety. For facility managers, estates teams, and the designated ‘responsible person,’ ensuring that emergency lighting performs when needed is not only a legal obligation but a moral one.

In this setting, a power failure could endanger vulnerable patients or disrupt vital care; therefore, emergency lighting must offer immediate, dependable illumination throughout the facility.

Healthcare environments pose further emergency lighting challenges. These include complex layouts, so careful placement of luminaires is needed for continuous illumination along escape routes; furthermore, 24/7 operation requires maintenance and testing to be scheduled with minimal disruption to patients, particularly when they are resting.

THORLUX HISTORY 08

In 2009 Thorlux designed an ambitious carbon-offsetting scheme to help compensate for its emissions.

Thorlux Lighting is committed to minimising its environmental impact. However, even with the most responsible approach, carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, collectively referred to as CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e), will be released into the atmosphere.

For this reason, the Thorlux carbon offsetting woodland project was set up on 215 acres of land in Cwm Fagor, Monmouthshire. A total of 179,412 native broadleaf trees were planted between 2009 and 2022. This project will have the effect of sequestering over 44,385 tonnes of CO₂e over a period of one hundred years.

Thanks in part to the woodland planting project, Thorlux has been officially recognised as carbon neutral since 2012. This status has been assessed by an independent third party using the international ISO 14064-1 standard, which measures greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals.
