Another project completed, another happy client.

We recently carried out specialist rotten timber repairs to the bay window, carefully addressing the affected areas while retaining as much of the original timber as possible.

We’re always grateful when clients take the time to share their experience with us. Good communication, keeping clients informed throughout the work and delivering a high standard of workmanship are all important parts of the service we aim to provide - particularly when working on a property while the homeowners are away.

Thank you to our client for taking the time to leave such thoughtful feedback. It means a lot to the whole HRG Services team.

Looking to improve the comfort and energy efficiency of your period property without replacing your original windows? Secondary glazing could be the answer.

Our secondary glazing package involves installing a discreet additional pane of glass to the inside of your existing sash or casement windows. This creates an insulating air gap between the original window and the new secondary glazing, helping to reduce heat loss, draughts and outside noise while keeping the original external appearance completely intact.

We offer different styles to suit the existing window, including tilt-balanced vertical sliders for sash windows and horizontal sliding systems for casements. Each unit is carefully measured and fitted to work with the existing window, with discreet aluminium frames and suitable glazing selected for the property.

Secondary glazing can be particularly useful for listed buildings, conservation areas and period homes where altering or replacing the original windows may not be appropriate. It’s a practical way to improve performance while continuing to respect the character of the building.

A traditional timber door can often be upgraded while retaining the character and proportions of the original design.

This dark green front door in Winterbourne Stoke was refurbished as part of a slim double glazing package, including the fan light above the door. Slim double glazing provides an opportunity to improve the thermal performance of traditional joinery while maintaining a sympathetic appearance.

At HRG Services, we specialise in discreet glazing upgrades for period properties, helping homeowners improve comfort and efficiency without compromising the character of their original timber features.

Rotten timber doesn’t always mean a window needs replacing.

These windows in Warminster were in a serious state of repair, with significant deterioration affecting the original timber. Replacement wasn’t a practical option due to the cost involved, so a full refurbishment and overhaul provided a way to restore the existing windows while retaining as much of the original timber and character as possible.

The windows were carefully assessed, with the damaged areas addressed through specialist timber repairs before the refurbishment could be completed. A full refurbishment can include removing rotten timber, carrying out repairs, restoring the window’s operation, draught-proofing where required and fully preparing and painting the finished window.

The result is a set of original windows given a new lease of life, demonstrating that even windows in a serious state of repair can sometimes be carefully restored rather than replaced.

Concerned that your timber windows are beyond repair? Give us a call to arrange your free, no obligation assessment.

A great example of how original timber windows can be upgraded without losing the character of a period property.

For this ground floor kitchen window in Lyndhurst, we installed slim double glazing directly into the existing sashes. The original sashes were carefully prepared to accommodate the 12mm slim double-glazed units, allowing the existing timber windows to be retained while improving thermal performance and comfort.

Slim double glazing offers a discreet way to bring modern glazing performance to traditional timber windows. Once installed and finished, the glazing remains sympathetic to the original proportions, helping the window retain its traditional appearance while providing the benefits of modern double glazing.

The buildings worth protecting 🏛️

Every period home and listed building has a story, and its original windows are a big part of it.

Handmade timber, old glass and fine joinery can’t simply be replaced. But with the right care, they can be restored.

That’s what we do: we protect the character of these buildings, one window at a time 🪟

Own a period property? Let’s keep its story going 👇

Sometimes it’s the smallest details that make the biggest difference.

For traditional sash windows, a polished brass Brighton fastener is a classic choice of window furniture. It secures the two sashes together when the window is closed, while adding a timeless finishing detail that suits period properties beautifully.

We carefully fit the fastener to ensure it is positioned correctly and operates smoothly, while complementing the existing style of the window. Brass is a durable material when properly cared for, and with regular cleaning and maintenance, quality brass window furniture can last for many years - making it a practical as well as beautiful choice for a traditional restoration.

It’s all part of our approach to restoration: preserving the character of the original window while making sure every detail works as it should.

A beautiful older property deserves a finish that complements its original features.

This property in Titchfield underwent an exterior painting and repairs package to its original timber sash windows. The work focused on preparing the existing timber properly, addressing areas requiring repair and applying a high-quality paint finish to provide long-term protection against the elements.

Our specialist painting service includes thorough preparation, filling and sanding where required, followed by the appropriate primer, undercoat and topcoat system. Proper preparation is essential when working with traditional timber, helping create a durable finish while keeping the original character of the windows intact.

Even smaller and more unusual windows deserve the same level of care and attention.

This beautiful circular window in Marlborough was carefully restored with the existing glass removed and a new 12mm slim double glazing unit routed into the timber. The window was then fully prepared before receiving interior and exterior painting to complete the restoration.

Slim double glazing can be a great way to improve the performance of traditional windows while retaining their original character and unusual architectural details.
