So here's my 2p worth on this story about Sainsbury's and their white eggs.... https://www.poultrynews.co.uk/business-politics/sainsburys-to-fully-switch-to-white-eggs.html
Back at the start of April we rescued some 'free range' hens from a 'free range' farm. When they arrived they were laying white eggs like the ones Sainsburys are saying have a smaller carbon footprint. Now, I'm no scientist, and I've no idea what makes a white egg white or a brown egg brown. I could probably look it up but I'm going with experience. Here's a few before and afters of one of those white laying hens we rescued who was indeed laying pure white eggs when she arrived. Feathers are coming back in nicely, she's lively and friendly, Little Rammy, aka Mother Hen, can pick her up for cuddles and guess what, no longer a white egg in sight. They eat layers pellets, veg and salad leaves, a bit of mixed corn and whatever they manage to forage on their actual free ranging adventures across the croft.
I know what colour eggs I'd rather buy and eat. What about you? As for carbon footprints who knows 🤷♀️ perhaps someone can enlighten me. Maybe a scrawny, baldy, smaller, unhappy, longer producing hen does take up less space and produce less carbon. 🤔 And, as for free range.... there's 'free range' and free range and the two look totally different.
