Kiddos breakfast that is both enjoyable and super healthy! We love waffles in our house but we make them with a purpose to nourish our body as well as enjoy them.

Sweet Potato and Apple cinnamon waffles, topped with flax and peanut butter ( top tip for sneaking in flax for kiddos is to sprinkle on the waffle and top with peanut butter!). Added pear and strawberries as well as yogurt.

Protein rich, fibre rich, a great plant variety and fermented foods in one go!

Gut health ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
For a 5-year-old, we rate this 5/5 for gut health.
It includes:

🍠 Sweet potato – fibre and diverse plant compounds.
🍎 Apple – pectin, a prebiotic fibre.
🍐 Pear – another excellent source of fibre.
🍓 Strawberries – vitamin C and polyphenols.
🌾 Oats and wholemeal spelt (in the waffle) – beta-glucans and whole-grain fibre.
🌱 Chia and flaxseed – fibre and healthy fats.
🥜 Peanut butter – healthy fats and some plant protein.
🥣 Yogurt – it contains live cultures, it contributes beneficial bacteria.
🧀 Cottage cheese – a good source of protein in the waffle.

This is a really well-balanced breakfast for a young child:
✅ Good amount of protein.
✅ Over 6 g of fibre, which is a substantial contribution towards a child's daily needs.
✅ Around 8–9 different plant foods before lunchtime, supporting good gut microbiome diversity.
✅ A mix of protein, healthy fats and slow-release carbohydrates to help keep them satisfied through the morning.

🌱Plant Diversity Score

This single meal scores 10 unique plant points. Achieving a double-digit variety score before lunchtime provides an exceptional range of distinct prebiotics to feed your beneficial gut bacteria.Your plant sources include:

Oats (Grains)
Chia seeds (Seeds)
Flaxseed (Seeds)
Walnuts (Nuts)
Pumpkin seeds (Seeds)
Cinnamon (Spices)
Strawberries (Fruit)
Blueberries (Fruit)
Raspberries (Fruit)
Blackberries (Fruit)

Why This Breakfast Scores Highly

Exceptional Protein-to-Carb Ratio: Crossing the 30g protein threshold is excellent for adults. The high protein from the skyr and dairy milk slows digestion, while safely blunting any potential glucose response from the carbohydrates in the oats and berries.

Massive Fibre Delivery: At over 14g of fibre, this single meal delivers nearly half of the UK recommended daily adult intake (30g).

Metabolic and Anti-inflammatory Boost: Walnuts supply heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, pumpkin seeds provide magnesium, and the sprinkle of cinnamon is known to naturally improve insulin sensitivity.

The hill I will I die on. Breakfast is the easiest way to get maximum fibre and plant diversity in and takes the pressure off the rest of the day, also controls glucose spike straight from the start of the day.

Here is my 5 year old’s breakfast

Porridge:
30g oats
100g semi skimmed milk
3g chia
3g flaxeed
3g honey
10g banana
10g peanut butter

Fruits
30g strawberries
10g blueberries
10g raspberries
10g blackberries

Nutritional BreakdownBased on standard nutritional values, here is the macro and micro breakdown for the entire bowl:

🥣 Calories: ~296 kcal
🥛 Protein: 11.6 g 🌱Fibre: 7.8 g
🥔Carbohydrates: 39.9 g
🥜Fat: 11.1 gP
🍓Plant Diversity ScoreT: his breakfast provides 9 unique plant points in a single sitting. For context, the widely recommended healthy target is 30 different plants per week, meaning your child is hitting nearly a third of that goal before leaving the house. The 9 plant sources included are:
Oats (Grains)
Chia seeds (Seeds)
Flaxseed (Seeds)
Peanut butter (Legumes/Nuts)
Banana (Fruit)
Strawberries (Fruit)
Blueberries (Fruit)
Raspberries (Fruit)
Blackberries (Fruit)

Why This Mix is Perfect for a 5-Year-Old

Superb Fibre Content: A 5-year-old needs roughly 15 grams of fibre a day. This breakfast provides over half of their total daily requirement (7.8g) in one go, supporting great digestion.

Excellent Protein Level: At 11.6g, this satisfies about 60% of a 5-year-old's daily protein needs (~19g). The combination of milk, oats, peanut butter, and seeds creates a highly bioavailable amino acid profile.

Steady Energy Release: The healthy fats from the seeds and peanut butter, alongside the high fibre, will slow down the absorption of the natural sugars from the fruit and honey. This prevents a mid-morning energy crash at school or play.

Elderberry season

A quick reminder that elderberries are ripe and ready to harvest.

Elderberry is great for mmune support, high antioxidant content, and cold and flu symptom relief.

Freezing helps get the berries off easily but it also helps preserve the berries for use later in the year when cold season is upon us 💕

Warning!‼️ Do not eat raw elderberries, they need cooking. Harvest only if you can recognise the berries.
