This week we started our annual willow harvest. There is a lot to do and as in previous years we are having a couple of volunteer days in January ( on the 10th and 31st). These are always lovely days working outside together and I provide a nice warm lunch.
If you fancy learning about willow growing, meeting new people, or just getting outside working for a wholesome day in the countryside near Rye then do get in touch. Be warned you might get a bit wet and muddy too!
Email [email protected] and if interested and I'll send more details.

This is Julie carrying some of her willow offcuts back from the studio. These are willow sticks left over from making baskets and are what we use to make our Artists Charcoal. There was an article about how we make the charcoal in Rye News today. You can read the article here https://willowweaver.com/shop/p/natural-artists-charcoal

Another nice review of our willow charcoal on Etsy.
The willow used to make this charcoal is grown organically by us here . It is then hand harvested, sorted and dried for storage. It is then soaked to make it flexible again for to make things with. Any bits not used, or trimmed off the work, after making are collected together. The finer bits are bundled and dried to use to help start the fire in our wood burner. James puts thicker bits into tins which then go in the fire. The willow is burnt with reduced oxygen and we end up with a tin full of charcoal sticks. These are all then tested and packaged into boxes ready to send out to customers who will use them to draw with.
