Marmadukes at Henderson’s: A Concept – Part 2

Studio Jim’s approach embraced the factory-like essence of the Henderson’s building - echoing Sheffield’s industrial legacy with angular rooflines and blackened façades - while drawing on the material language of traditional Danish cabins.

Working closely with , the design celebrates structural honesty with a new exposed steel skeleton that holds the building together. At ground level, concrete, steel, and tile nod to the building’s industrial past, while warm timber and Nordic plywood bring softness and intimacy.

A bold steel mezzanine and staircase unlock the height of the space, and timber-clad “factory cabins” house the operational core - kitchen, toilets, and storage - all connected by a glazed atrium. At the heart, a curved steel counter anchors the café, ready to serve and roast.

Outside, a multi-level courtyard garden reimagines the arrival: rich planting, all-season seating, and an accessible entrance make the space more welcoming and inclusive.

The result is a space that bridges heritage and modernity, industry and hospitality, Sheffield and Scandinavia - without ever resorting to cliché.

Marmadukes at Henderson’s: A Concept- Part 1

When began exploring ideas for a potential fourth site, Studio Jim was invited to develop a concept for a unique location - the iconic Henderson’s Relish building on Leavy Greave Road in Sheffield.

The project posed a compelling challenge: how to create a café that felt distinctly Marmadukes, while honouring the heritage of one of Sheffield’s most recognisable landmarks.

The brief was open but layered: merge two Sheffield icons - Marmadukes and Henderson’s - without diluting either identity. Make it Danish, make it contemporary. Use black, orange, and brown - but avoid pastiche. Respect the industrial past, celebrate the Victorian shell, and deliver a space that’s welcoming, light-filled, warm, and operationally efficient.

A tall order. And an exciting one!

🔜 Post 2 will delve into how the design came to life - including the mezzanine, factory cabins, and courtyard garden.

A study in contrasts, this interior balances crisp modernism with warmth and personality. Designed by Studio Jim, the space blends mid-century influence with thoughtful functionality - clean lines, rich timber, and a confident use of colour.

Light moves easily through the home, softening white surfaces and highlighting textured materials. Sculptural lighting, vintage ceramics, and graphic textiles bring depth and rhythm, while open shelving and pared-back cabinetry keep the space grounded and purposeful.

This is a home shaped by intention - layered, tactile, and quietly expressive. A space that feels both designed and lived in.

Earlier this year, Studio Jim was tasked with creating a brand new identity for .sheffield - a much-loved Sheffield pub with deep historical roots.

The brief: bring this heritage venue into the 21st century, while staying true to its character. A considered refresh to help the pub evolve with a growing cultural shift in how people socialise.

The new brand is proudly independent and unmistakably Sheffield - blending traditional pub charm with bold, youthful energy. It’s designed to welcome guests with colour, warmth and culture, reflecting The Three Tuns’ new role as a vibrant social and creative hub in the city centre.

From signage to socials, every touchpoint was crafted to feel familiar, but fresh.

As Pride Month wraps up, a little note from Studio Jim - a proudly queer-owned business - to say the spirit of Pride lives on here all year round.

One of the studio’s highlights this month was the first-ever Tuns of Pride weekend over at .sheffield - a big, joyful thank you to everyone who came along and made it so special.

Studio Jim also continues to support through year-round donations, because visibility, safety and celebration for LGBTQ+ people shouldn’t be limited to June.

Thanks to everyone for showing up, speaking out, and sharing the love 🏳️‍🌈

The Sapiens Project - Sheffield

Commissioned by leading facial capture studio Ten24, this was no ordinary interior design brief. At the end of last year, Studio Jim designed and delivered the interior for a pioneering space dedicated to diversifying the digital world through large-scale 3D facial scanning.

At the heart of the space sits the scanning chamber - a futuristic cube installation, seemingly floating within the room. Both functional core and visual centrepiece, it combines precision engineering with spatial clarity.

The wider design merges advanced technology with a calm, human-centred approach. Brushed metal, warm wood, and soft textiles come together to create an environment that feels refined, intuitive, and welcoming. From the high-tech chamber to the quiet lounge, every detail is considered to support comfort and ease.

Function with feeling — designed for the future.

So… I’ve taken on a pub!

The Three Tuns in Sheffield - full of charm, history, and some very questionable carpet.

With plans to bring it back to life and make it something special. It’s going to be a bit of a journey - part restoration, part reinvention, probably part chaos - but hopefully, a whole lot of fun.

Don’t worry, Studio Jim isn’t going anywhere - just adding “pub landlord” to the CV.

Follow .sheffield to see the pints pouring, the plans unfolding, and the pub coming back to life.

Fox Brothers Styling Opticians turns one!

It’s been a year since Fox Brothers Styling Opticians opened the doors to their new home in Didsbury, Manchester - Studio Jim delivered a full interior transformation alongside a new brand identity.

A vibrant, contemporary space where bold colour meets playful design, this stylish spot is as fun as it is functional - with thoughtful details throughout, from custom displays to relaxed corners and tactile finishes. Every element was considered to create an experience that feels personal, welcoming, and perfectly at home in the heart of Didsbury.

When asked me to develop a concept that reimagines his family’s new home, it set in motion a truly creative process.

The conversation centred around how a 70s home could retain its original character while incorporating a contemporary twist - a space that feels both functional and inviting for them, friends, and family.

The design approach honours its retro charm while exploring the possibility of a rear extension to enhance light and space. It embraces mixed timbers, some of which could be salvaged and repurposed. Materials like walnut, reclaimed parquet, and marble - paired with soft neutrals - bring refinement, while reclaimed wood, contemporary artwork, and vintage furniture adds a bold contrast and personality.

A purposefully asymmetrical extension, constructed from timber and glazing, introduces a modern edge while embracing the home’s indoor-outdoor connection - making the most of its stunning garden setting.
