Heritage design isn’t defined by the age of a building.
Some of the most successful places are those that take their inspiration from the character and architectural traditions of their surroundings.

Set within the Herefordshire countryside, this barn takes its cues from the region’s traditional agricultural architecture. Rather than recreating a rustic interior, the aim was to create somewhere that feels calm, welcoming and deeply connected to its surroundings. The architecture sets the tone, while the interiors complement it through natural materials, a restrained palette and carefully considered furnishings, creating spaces that feel warm, welcoming and authentic.

Heritage design isn’t simply about restoring historic buildings. It’s about understanding the character of a place and designing in a way that respects it—whether breathing new life into a listed property or creating something entirely new that sits comfortably within its surroundings.

The result is a place that feels rooted in the Herefordshire landscape, offering guests all the comforts of contemporary living while celebrating the enduring appeal of traditional rural architecture.

First impressions matter.

The North and South Lodges at Pudleston Court were designed to welcome visitors to the estate, creating a memorable sense of arrival long before they reached the main house.

Today, that sense of welcome continues inside. Although each lodge has its own personality, both interiors were designed with the same philosophy: to create relaxed, inviting spaces that respect the building’s heritage while offering the comfort expected of a luxury holiday retreat.

Natural materials, layered textures and a carefully curated collection of furnishings sit comfortably alongside the original architectural features, creating interiors that feel timeless rather than themed. From the moment guests step through the door, the aim is for them to feel instantly at home.

Heritage buildings have always been about making an impression. Today, that impression begins with light-filled interiors, views across the Herefordshire countryside and the promise of a slower pace of life.

From gatekeeper’s lodge to luxury retreat. Built in 1846 as part of the original Gothic Revival vision for Pudleston Court, the North and South Lodges were designed to create a memorable first impression, welcoming visitors to the estate long before they reached the main house.

Our brief was to breathe new life into these remarkable buildings while remaining true to their architectural heritage. The interior celebrates the original character of the lodges, with exposed stone walls, leaded windows and painted timber beams providing a rich historic backdrop. The existing shaker kitchen in a soft heritage green, together with natural timber finishes and a restrained palette, complements the architecture beautifully, providing the perfect foundation for a scheme that feels calm, timeless and entirely at home within the building.

Through carefully considered decoration, furnishings and finishing touches, we ensured the lodges meet the expectations of modern living while retaining the charm and authenticity that make them so special. The result is a space that feels as though it has evolved naturally over generations, offering all the comfort of a contemporary retreat within the historic fabric of the building.

Restoring and reimagining heritage buildings is one of the most rewarding aspects of our work, preserving their stories while ensuring they continue to be enjoyed for generations to come.

We recently had the pleasure of working with over the course of a week, to capture the cottages on the beautiful estate.
