Robin Welch 1936 - 2019
A fine example of one of his tankards, autumnal colour palette and perfect for a pint!

Robin Welch studio pottery is held in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and around the world in many public and private collections.
Robin was a versatile potter who began his career as a fine thrower and designer, and completed it as an artist who inventively combined throwing with hand-building and constructed elements. Having served an apprenticeship making successful domestic wares and individual pieces, by the 1980s he was exploring the freer forms and
‘canvas’ of his pots, using surface marking and colouration to evoke aspects of the landscape, particularly that of Australia, where he was briefly based in the early 1960s before settling in Suffolk. He often combined wheel-thrown bases with coiled or slab-built upper sections, the pots often repeatedly fired to add patina and depth. His abstract marking, palette and sense of texture indicated his increasing concerns as a painter.
Robin’s work reflected a wide-ranging education which began in Nuneaton and ended at the Central School in London, via tuition with the Leach family and a period at Penzance School of Art.

A local pot, made by Roy Evans at Severn Gorge Pottery. Likely an early 70s piece.
It is marked with his RE stamp alongside Severn Gorge/Handmade in England.
Tactile and aesthetically pleasing, a useful pot!

Roy opened Edgmond Pottery, in 1967 selling out to the retail sector covering the Midlands, Cumbria and Wales.
In 1970 he was invited to join the Ironbridge Gorge Museum, then in its infancy, as a working potter, demonstrating to its visitors, whilst running a working pottery. With high grade clays readily available in the area he built a slip house, selling prepared clays to other potters and colleges.
During this time he also taught pottery at Shrewsbury Art College and lectured in ceramics at Wolverhampton Polytechnic Arts Department, also giving talks and demonstrations to various interested organisations.

1977 found him looking for peace and quiet, he left The Ironbridge Museum, found a disused property in the south Shropshire hills, he demolished the old buildings and built what is now Tankerville Pottery, opening at Easter the following year.

• Studio Pottery bowl by Adas Dworski •
marked ‘WYE’
The Wye Pottery was set up in 1956 by Adam (Adas) Dworski, a Yugoslavian ex-lawyer, in Clyro, Radnorshire (now Powys) in Wales. The pottery was named for the 130 mile river Wye which passes nearby.
He claimed that when he set up he was one of only four potters working in Wales. Dworski was a self-taught potter who used majolica glazes with brushed decoration mainly on earthenware, but stoneware and porcelain were also used.
Measures 17cm x 5cm deep
Great condition and brutalist in style.
